Assessed from Vispring's published specification for this mattress, captured September 2026, and from regular price comparison across our UK retail partners.
Choose the Herald Superb if you want traditional craftsmanship and natural fillings rather than foam. Wool and cotton wick moisture and regulate temperature, so if you're a hot sleeper you should notice a cooler, drier feel than memory foam gives. The horsehair layer adds natural springiness and lets air circulate through the mattress. The ability to choose your spring tension is genuinely useful: heavier sleepers can go firmer, lightweight side sleepers can go softer, and you are more likely to end up with a feel that suits you. The mattress stands 21cm tall plus around 6cm of doming from those generous fillings, which settles gradually with use.
Key Features & what's inside
- Bonded British fleece wool and cotton. A layer of bonded British fleece wool and cotton sits closest to you. These natural fillings breathe well and help keep the sleep surface at a comfortable temperature.
- Horsehair layer. Horsehair provides natural bounce and breathability. It springs back readily, which means the surface recovers quickly when you move rather than leaving an impression.
- Blended British fleece wool and cotton. A further layer of blended British fleece wool and cotton adds cushioning above the springs. It helps distribute your weight evenly across the spring unit.
- Spring system. The support comes from 1,476 vanadium steel pocket springs, hand-nested in calico and arranged in a single layer. Nesting the springs by hand packs them closely together, so support follows the shape of your body more precisely.

Who's it NOT for?
This is a poor fit if your budget sits anywhere below the £3,899 starting price, as there is no cheaper route in. It is also only made in UK King and Super King, so single and standard double sleepers will need to look elsewhere. And if you prefer the slow, cradling sink of memory foam, natural fillings will feel quite different.

Is the Vispring Herald Superb firm or medium-firm?
Vispring describes the standard feel as medium-firm, although some retailer listings label it as firm. Spring tensions are also available in Soft, Medium, Firm and Extra Firm, so the feel can be tailored when you order. If you are between tensions, ask the retailer for guidance based on your weight.
How many springs does the Vispring Herald Superb have?
It has 1,476 vanadium steel pocket springs, hand-nested in calico and arranged in a single layer. Hand-nesting places the springs closer together than machine assembly typically allows, which means more even, responsive support across the mattress.
What is the Vispring Herald Superb made of?
The fillings are entirely natural: bonded and blended British fleece wool, cotton and a layer of horsehair, all over the pocket spring unit. The construction also uses high-quality ticking, felt washers and protective wool borders. There is no foam or synthetic filling.
How deep is the Vispring Herald Superb mattress?
The mattress is 21cm deep, plus around 6cm of doming (give or take 2cm) from the generous natural fillings. That doming settles gradually as the fillings compress with use, which is normal for this style of mattress.
What sizes does the Vispring Herald Superb come in?
It is available in UK King and UK Super King, with prices ranging from £3,899 to £4,899. Smaller sizes are not listed, so it will not suit anyone shopping for a single or standard double.
