- Standard foam. A single layer of polyurethane foam at 33 kg/m3, which means an even, medium firm feel across the whole surface rather than distinct comfort zones. Polyester wadding sits within the washable quilted cover to add a slightly softer sleeping surface.

- Room for two: At 135 x 190cm, or 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in, you get 67.5cm each for two people sharing, the long standing UK standard for couples.
- Fits typical UK bedrooms: We suggest a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m, which most second bedrooms and first flats can manage with a wardrobe and drawers still in place.
- Light enough to move alone: A single 12cm foam layer weighs far less than a sprung double, which means turning stairs in an older terrace or a tight new build landing is less of a battle.
- Sensible foam for the price: The 33 kg/m3 polyurethane foam should hold its shape rather than softening quickly, so a shared double gets even wear on both sides.
- Easy to dress: Standard double sheets and a 200 x 200cm double duvet fit, and both are stocked everywhere at every price point.
- Good guest room value: Visiting couples get a proper shared bed, and the washable quilted cover is a practical touch for a room used in bursts.
This size suits you if...
You're setting up a first flat or furnishing a whole home at once and need a shared bed that keeps the budget intact, you're kitting out a guest room where visiting couples will stay a few nights at a time, or you sleep alone but like room to spread out, perhaps with a dog or cat claiming a corner by morning.
Consider another size if...
You sleep alone in a small room and the double would crowd out bedside tables or drawers. The UK single is 45cm narrower at the same length, and we suggest a room of at least 2.1m x 2.8m for it.

Is the Ikea Afjall double big enough for two adults?
It gives 67.5cm each for two people sharing, the standard UK double allowance. That's workable for most couples, although the Afjall's slim 12cm depth means heavier sleepers may feel the base beneath, and sharing concentrates weight in the middle. Lighter couples and occasional guests will get on with it best.
What size room does the Afjall double need?
We suggest at least 2.6m x 2.8m, with around 3m x 3m the comfortable norm. That allows walking space on both sides and, in most rooms, bedside tables too. In a typical second bedroom or first flat you should still fit a wardrobe and a chest of drawers alongside it.
Can I get the Ikea Afjall in a UK double up narrow stairs?
More easily than most doubles. It's a single 12cm layer of foam with no springs, so it's slim, relatively light and has some flex, which helps on the turning stairs of older terraces and tight new build landings. Two people can manage it comfortably; one determined person often can.
Should I choose the Afjall in a UK double or a UK single?
Share the bed, even occasionally, and the double is the clear choice: it's 45cm wider than the UK single at the same length. Sleeping alone in a compact room, the UK single frees up floor space and needs a room of only about 2.1m x 2.8m by our guidance.
Does the Afjall double come in a bigger size for couples?
No. The UK double is the largest size the Afjall is made in, so there's no king option. If you want 75cm each rather than 67.5cm, you'd need a different mattress in a UK king, which also needs a bigger room: we suggest at least 2.7m x 2.9m.
