Layer Details
Gel foam
A cooling, breathable gel foam that cradles you in a similar way to memory foam. It sits at the top, so it is the layer that manages heat first and gives the mattress its softer surface feel.
Memory foam
A memory foam layer that works with the gel foam above it to add support and comfort. It helps the surface ease around your body rather than pushing back against it.
Comfort foam
A high-resilience convoluted foam comfort layer, there for pressure relief. It adds a bit of bounce between the softer foams and the springs below.
800 pocket springs
Individually fabric-wrapped pocket springs that give targeted support and help isolate motion. Because each spring works on its own, you should notice less of a partner's movement across the bed.
Layer details from arthursleep.co.uk and mattressman.co.uk product pages, October 2026.
- Cooling where kids and teens need it: The gel foam layer is designed to draw heat away, which matters in small bedrooms that warm up quickly overnight.
- Leaves room for everything else: At 90cm wide, the bed can share a child's room with a wardrobe, desk and toy storage without dominating the floor.
- Two can fit in one room: Siblings sharing, or a guest room set up with two beds, works with this size where anything wider would swallow the walkway.
- A sensible spare room choice: In a room that doubles as an office, a UK single keeps the desk usable while giving guests foam comfort over proper springs.
- Cheap, easy bedding: Standard single sheets and a 135 x 200cm single duvet fit, and both are the most widely stocked bedding of any UK size.
This size suits you if...
You're buying for a child's or teenager's room where the bed has to share space with storage and a desk, you're a single adult in a compact room or first flat, or you're setting up a spare room that also holds a desk. The medium firm feel suits growing sleepers and occasional guests, and the cooling layer helps in small rooms that trap heat.
Consider another size if...
You're an adult who sprawls, or you sometimes share the bed. At 90cm wide there's no spare room for either, so we'd recommend the UK double instead, which is 45cm wider; allow at least 2.6m x 2.8m for it.

Will the UK single Arthur Sleep Cool Memory Mattress fit a bunk or mid sleeper frame?
The 90 x 190cm footprint matches standard UK bunk and mid sleeper frames, so width and length are fine. The catch is depth: Arthur Sleep doesn't publish one for this mattress, and raised frames often set a maximum so the guard rail stays effective. Check your frame's depth limit against the retailer's listing before ordering.
Is a UK single big enough for an adult?
For one average-sized adult who sleeps fairly still, yes: 90 x 190cm is the standard UK one-person size, and the medium firm feel suits most back and combination sleepers. Taller adults should note the 190cm length, and anyone who spreads out will feel the 90cm width. Restless sleepers tend to be happier in the UK small double, which is 30cm wider.
How much floor space does a UK single mattress need?
We suggest at least 2.1m x 2.8m of floor space for a UK single, which is our own guidance rather than the manufacturer's. That allowance covers walking room and drawer clearance. In a loft conversion or box room, the narrow 90cm footprint is the main advantage: it tucks under a sloped ceiling where a wider bed simply wouldn't.
Is this a good mattress for a child's room?
It's a reasonable fit. The medium firm support suits growing bodies, and the cooling gel layer helps in small bedrooms that hold heat overnight. The 90cm width leaves floor space free for a desk, wardrobe and toy storage. One caveat: the brand publishes little construction detail, so if you want a stated depth or spring count you won't find one.
What bedding do I need for the UK single size?
Standard UK single fitted sheets and a single duvet, which measures 135 x 200cm, fit this mattress. Single bedding is the cheapest and easiest to find of any size, useful if you're kitting out a child's room or guest bed where you'll want spare sets. Because Arthur Sleep doesn't publish a depth, check fitted sheet pocket size against the retailer's listing.
