- The traditional couples' size: At 135cm wide, a UK double gives 67.5cm each for two people sharing, enough for most couples who sleep reasonably close.
- Fits typical UK bedrooms: We suggest a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m, which most doubles, second bedrooms and first flats can manage with furniture in place.
- Room for bedside tables: Because the UK double is 15cm narrower than the UK king, many rooms that couldn't take a king still allow bedside tables on both sides.
- Contract-grade fire safety: Crib 5 is a stricter fire safety standard than domestic mattresses require, which makes this size a sensible pick for a guest room that hosts visiting couples.
- Easy to dress: Standard double sheets and a 200 x 200cm double duvet fit this size, and both are stocked everywhere at every price.
This size suits you if...
You're a couple furnishing a typical UK bedroom where a king would leave no walking space, you're kitting out a guest room that needs to sleep two comfortably, or you sleep alone and want space to spread out, perhaps with a dog or cat claiming a corner. The 135 x 190cm footprint shares well without dominating the room.
Consider another size if...
You and your partner both want more personal space and your room can take a wider bed. The UK king gives you 15cm more width, so we'd recommend the UK king version of this mattress instead.

Is the Highgrove Stafford Crib 5 double big enough for two adults?
For most couples, yes. The UK double gives 67.5cm each for two people sharing, which suits partners who sleep fairly close. If one of you is broad-shouldered or a restless sleeper, the UK king, which is 15cm wider, may be the more comfortable long-term choice.
What room size do I need for this mattress in a UK double?
We suggest a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m, with around 3m x 3m the comfortable norm. That's our guidance, not Highgrove's, and it assumes you'll want a wardrobe, drawers and space to walk around the bed, the usual setup in a second bedroom or first flat.
Will a UK double fit up the stairs in an older house?
A 135 x 190cm mattress is usually manageable on turning stairs in older terraces and tight new build landings, though pocket sprung mattresses flex less than foam ones. Measure your narrowest turn before ordering, and check the retailer's delivery notes, since Highgrove doesn't publish handling guidance for this mattress.
Is the double a good size for a guest room?
It's arguably the best one. A UK double sleeps visiting couples properly while leaving space for guest room furniture, and its Crib 5 contract fire rating exceeds what domestic use requires. Standard double bedding is cheap and widely stocked, which helps when the room is only used occasionally.
Should I get the double or the small double of this mattress?
The UK double is 15cm wider than the UK small double, and for two people that extra width matters night after night. Choose the UK small double only if your room genuinely can't take 135cm; otherwise the UK double is the better shared size.
