- Room to spread out alone: The UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, which means a solo sleeper can roll, stretch and change position without meeting the edge.
- Fits rooms a double won't: At 15cm narrower than a UK double, it can be the difference between a door that clears the bed frame and one that doesn't.
- Springs that suit shared occasional use: Pocket springs move independently, which means a guest-room couple sharing the odd night won't feel every turn the other makes.
- Standard length, compact width: At 190cm long it matches the UK single and UK double, so most adults fit comfortably while the width saves floor space.
- Easy to dress: 4ft is a standard UK size, so small double fitted sheets are simple to find, and a standard double duvet drapes generously over it.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone and a single now feels cramped, perhaps a teenager who's outgrown one but whose room can't spare the floor space of a bigger bed. Or you're furnishing a box room, loft conversion or small second bedroom where a standard double would block walkways, and the bed is mostly used by one person, with a couple sharing only occasionally.
Consider another size if...
You and a partner will sleep on it every night, in which case 120cm of width feels tight long term. We'd recommend the UK double instead; it's 15cm wider, the same length, and needs a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m.

Is a small double Ice Arthur big enough for a couple?
For occasional nights, yes. The pocket spring construction helps here, since each spring responds to the person above it rather than the whole bed moving. For a couple sharing nightly, though, 120cm of width is a squeeze, and we'd point you to the UK double, which is 15cm wider at the same length.
What room size do I need for the Ice Arthur in a UK small double?
We suggest a room of at least 2.4m x 2.8m. That's our own guidance, not the manufacturer's, and it allows enough clearance to walk round the bed and open drawers or a door. In a loft conversion, check where the ceiling height sits too, since the narrower footprint often lands better under the slope.
How much bigger is a small double than a single?
The UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, and the two are exactly the same length at 190cm. That extra width is entirely usable stretching room for one person, which is why this size suits a solo adult, or a teenager, who has outgrown a single but doesn't have space for a full double.
Will the small double fit in a box room or studio flat?
This is where the size makes most sense. At 120cm wide it's 15cm narrower than a UK double, which in a tight room can decide whether the door still clears the bed or you can stand beside it. Measure your room against our suggested minimum of 2.4m x 2.8m before committing.
What bedding does the Ice Arthur small double take?
Small double (4ft) fitted sheets, which are a standard UK size and easy to find, paired with a normal double duvet. The duvet hangs a little further over each side than it would on a UK double, which many people rather like, especially if two of you occasionally share.
