- The classic shared size: At 135 x 190cm the UK double gives two people sharing 67.5cm each, enough for most couples on a firm surface that keeps you on top rather than sunk in.
- Fits typical UK rooms: We suggest a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m, which most second bedrooms and older terraced houses can manage with a wardrobe still in place.
- Right for a guest room: A double means visiting couples can share comfortably, and the 1,000 pocket springs move independently, so one guest turning over disturbs the other a little less.
- Easy to dress and budget for: Double sheets and duvets are sold everywhere at every price, useful if you're kitting out a guest room or a whole home without spending much on bedding.
- Simpler to get upstairs: At 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in the UK double is easier to turn on the stairs of an older terrace or a tight new build landing than the UK king.
This size suits you if...
You're setting up a guest room where couples will occasionally stay, and you want them to share properly rather than squeeze into anything smaller. Or you're furnishing a second bedroom or first flat where the bed has to leave room for a wardrobe and drawers, and a firm feel suits the back and front sleepers likely to use it.
Consider another size if...
You and a partner will sleep on it every night and 67.5cm each feels tight, or your room is comfortably bigger than average. We'd recommend the UK king instead; it's 15cm wider and 10cm longer, and we suggest a room of at least 2.7m x 2.9m for it.

Is the Spare Room Ortho double big enough for two guests?
Yes, for occasional use. The UK double gives two people sharing 67.5cm each, which is fine for a night or two, and the pocket springs cushion each sleeper individually so movement carries across the bed less. For a couple sleeping on it every night, the width can start to feel snug, particularly if either of you spreads out.
What room size do I need for the Spare Room Ortho in a UK double?
We suggest at least 2.6m x 2.8m. That leaves space to walk round the bed and open a wardrobe, though bedside tables on both sides will feel tight at the minimum. If your spare room is smaller than that, the UK double may dominate it, and this mattress isn't listed in a single, so measure carefully first.
Should I get the Spare Room Ortho in a double or a king?
The UK double is 15cm narrower and 10cm shorter than the UK king, and it suits guest rooms and typical bedrooms where a king would crowd the space. Choose the UK king if it's your everyday bed for two and the room allows at least 2.7m x 2.9m. For occasional guests, the double is usually the sensible call.
Will a double mattress fit up narrow stairs in an older house?
A UK double at 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in is one of the easier sizes to manoeuvre, and pocket sprung mattresses like this one have some flex to help round a turn. Tight winders in older terraces can still be awkward, so measure the narrowest point of your stairs and landing before ordering.
What bedding fits the Spare Room Ortho double?
Standard UK double bedding: double fitted sheets for the 135 x 190cm footprint and a 200 x 200cm double duvet. Both are stocked everywhere at every price point, which helps if you're dressing a guest room on a budget. Nothing about this mattress needs special sizing, so anything labelled UK double will fit.
