Cover
The top cover of the mattress.
Airgocell foam layer
Emma's Airgocell foam sits beneath the cover, which means a cushioned, pressure-relieving surface where your body first meets the mattress.
SupportBase foam
A supportive foam layer that sits between the comfort foam and the springs, helping to keep your spine aligned.
3-zone pocket spring core
A pocket spring core divided into three zones, with a wraparound comfort foam edge. The zoning means support is tailored to different parts of your body, while the foam edge keeps the perimeter feeling stable.
Layer details from emma-sleep.co.uk product page, September 2026.
- Real stretching room for one: The UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, which means a solo sleeper can shift position freely rather than sleeping to attention.
- Fits rooms a double crowds: At 15cm narrower than the UK double, this size can be the difference between a box room feeling usable and the door barely clearing the bed.
- Zoned support at every width: The 3-zone pocket spring core works the same in this size, giving firmer support at the hips and a softer feel at the shoulders.
- Edge support matters more here: On a 120cm-wide mattress you sleep nearer the perimeter, so the wraparound comfort foam edge helps the sides feel stable rather than saggy.
- Easy to move upstairs: The slimmer 22cm profile and 4ft width make this a manageable size to carry into a loft conversion or up a narrow rental staircase.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone and have outgrown a UK single but your room can't spare the floor space a UK double demands, you're furnishing a guest room or holiday let where couples stay occasionally rather than nightly, or you're downsizing and the bed now has to fit the new room rather than the old one.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed every night, because 120cm across two adults feels tight over time. We'd recommend the UK double instead, which is the same length but gives you both noticeably more width.

Is the Emma Original Lite small double big enough for a couple?
For occasional nights, yes. The 3-zone springs and foam edge keep the surface supportive right to the sides, which helps when two people share 120cm of width. For every night, most couples find it cramped, and we'd suggest the UK double, which is 15cm wider at the same length.
What room size do I need for a small double mattress?
We suggest allowing at least 2.4m x 2.8m for the UK small double. That leaves enough room to walk around the bed and open drawers. In a box room or studio, measure carefully before ordering: a few centimetres either way decides whether the door still swings clear.
What bedding fits the Emma Original Lite in a small double?
You need small double (4ft) fitted sheets, which are widely stocked because 4ft is a standard UK size. A standard double duvet works well on top, with a little overhang each side. Frames are equally easy to find, so you won't be hunting for specialist sizes.
Is a small double or a UK double better for a teenager?
The UK small double usually wins here. It gives a teenager who has outgrown a UK single an extra 30cm of width, without swallowing the floor space they still need for a desk or wardrobe. The medium firm feel of this mattress suits growing sleepers who need proper spinal support.
