Layer Details
- Top layers. Naturally soft layers of wool, cotton, mohair, silk, cashmere and alpaca sit at the surface. These fibres give a plush initial feel while wicking moisture away as you sleep.
- Temperature-regulating layers. Beneath the comfort fibres are naturally temperature-regulating layers of hemp and flax. They help keep the mattress closer to a steady temperature through the night.
- Springs. The support core holds 19,170 pocket springs with adaptive, pressure-relieving micro springs, hand sewn into calico pockets. The micro springs respond to smaller contours, which means pressure points like hips and shoulders get more precise support.
Layer details from featherandblack.com product page, September 2026.
- 75cm each for two sharing: You each get 75cm of width, which means turning over without brushing your partner and firm support that stays firm right to your edge.
- 19,170 springs across a wider bed: The pocket springs move individually within their calico pockets, which means one of you getting up at 5am transfers less movement across the extra width.
- 200cm of length for taller sleepers: At 6ft 6in long, the UK king adds 10cm over a UK double, so anyone approaching six foot stops sleeping diagonally.
- Natural temperature control shared fairly: The hemp and flax layers regulate temperature across the full 150cm width, so two warm bodies are less likely to overheat each other.
- Fits more bedrooms than a super king: We suggest at least 2.7m x 2.9m for a UK king, which leaves walking space in rooms where a UK super king would dominate.
This size suits you if...
You share the bed every night and a UK double has started to feel like a negotiation, especially if one of you keeps earlier hours and you'd rather their alarm didn't wake you both. Or one of you is approaching six foot and it's length, more than width, you've been missing. At this price the mattress should outlast several bed frames, so sizing generously makes sense.
Consider another size if...
Your bedroom is smaller than the 2.7m x 2.9m we suggest for a UK king, or you sleep alone and the width would go unused. We'd recommend the UK double instead, allowing at least 2.6m x 2.8m of room.

Is the Flaxby Platinum Solstice in a UK king big enough for a couple?
Yes, comfortably for most. At 150cm wide it gives 75cm each for two people sharing, and the firm build means you won't roll towards the middle. If a pet routinely claims a corner, or you both spread out, the UK super king adds another 30cm of width at the same 200cm length.
What room size do I need for the Flaxby Platinum Solstice UK king?
We suggest at least 2.7m x 2.9m, and that's our guidance rather than Flaxby's. New build master bedrooms often look generous empty but shrink once wardrobes go in, so measure with furniture in place. Remember the mattress is 33cm deep, which adds visual bulk on a taller divan.
Is the UK king Flaxby Platinum Solstice long enough for tall sleepers?
At 200cm, it's 10cm longer than a UK double, which matters more than the extra width if one of you is around six foot. Feet stop hanging over the end and you can stretch out fully. Anyone taller still gains nothing by sizing up: the UK super king is the same length.
Will a king size reduce partner disturbance on this mattress?
It helps on two fronts. The 19,170 pocket springs respond individually, so movement doesn't travel far, and the 150cm width puts more mattress between you. If one of you gets up hours before the other, that combination makes early exits far less noticeable than on a narrower bed.
Should I get the Flaxby Platinum Solstice in a UK king or a UK super king?
The UK king suits most couples: real personal space without demanding a huge room. The UK super king is 30cm wider at the same length, and we suggest at least 3m x 2.9m of floor space for it. Given the cost of this mattress, let your room decide rather than ambition.
