Layer Details
Top layers
Naturally soft layers of wool, cotton, mohair, silk, cashmere and alpaca sit at the surface. These fibres give a plush initial feel while wicking moisture away as you sleep.
Temperature-regulating layers
Beneath the comfort fibres are naturally temperature-regulating layers of hemp and flax. They help keep the mattress closer to a steady temperature through the night.
Springs
The support core holds 19,170 pocket springs with adaptive, pressure-relieving micro springs, hand sewn into calico pockets. The micro springs respond to smaller contours, which means pressure points like hips and shoulders get more precise support.
Layer details from featherandblack.com product page, September 2026.
- 90cm of width each: Two people sharing get 90cm each, which means a partner who shifts position all night becomes far easier to ignore.
- Micro springs across a bigger surface: The adaptive micro springs respond to smaller contours, so at this width each sleeper gets precise support on their own side rather than a shared compromise.
- Space for company: When a child wanders in at 3am, or the dog treats the bed as routine, everyone still has somewhere to lie without a knee in their back.
- Natural temperature control matters more here: Hemp and flax layers regulate heat naturally, useful when three bodies rather than two are warming the same mattress.
- Full-length stretch: At 200cm long, or 6ft 6in, taller sleepers get room to stretch out without feet hanging off the end.
This size suits you if...
You share the bed every night and want the most sleeping space a standard UK size offers, your partner is genuinely restless and distance would do more for your sleep than any comfort layer, or children and pets regularly join you and a UK king has started to feel crowded. Your room should measure at least 3m x 2.9m, with more feeling comfortable.
Consider another size if...
Your bedroom falls short of the 3m x 2.9m we suggest as a minimum, or you sleep alone and would rattle around in it. We'd recommend the UK king instead, which is 30cm narrower, the same length, and needs a room of at least 2.7m x 2.9m.

Will the Flaxby Platinum Solstice super king fit in my bedroom?
The mattress measures 180 x 200cm, and we suggest a room of at least 3m x 2.9m so you can still open drawers and walk around the bed. Measure with the door swing in mind too: at this width the bed often sits closer to the door than you expect.
Is the super king worth it over the king for this mattress?
The UK super king is 30cm wider than the UK king, and both are the same length. If your partner is restless or children climb in, that extra width is what you will notice night to night. In a smaller room, though, the UK king leaves more space to live around the bed.
Can I get the Flaxby Platinum Solstice super king up the stairs?
It needs thought. This is a 33cm deep pocket sprung mattress at 180 x 200cm, and sprung mattresses cannot be folded the way foam can. Measure your stairwell, landing turns and door frames before ordering, and check the retailer's delivery access guidance if anything looks tight.
Is a super king big enough for a couple sharing with a child?
It is the size we would point families towards. Two adults get 90cm each, so when a child appears in the night there is genuine room to absorb them. The micro springs also isolate movement well, which helps when the smallest sleeper is the most fidgety.
