Layer Details
Top surface
Generously layered with 100% natural cashmere, mohair, cotton, hemp, flax and British wool. This is the winter side, where insulating wool with silk absorbs moisture and helps regulate temperature, which means fewer clammy nights in colder months.
Fillings
Soft cashmere, sourced as a byproduct from the fashion industry, brings insulation and a supremely gentle surface feel. It sits alongside traceable British sheep's wool from the British Wool partnership.
Springs
13,060 responsive springs across seven layers of high-density micro and Cortec pocket springs, which means very precise, localised support. The Cortec system is glueless and 100% recyclable.
Reverse surface
A breathable cotton side designed for summer use. Flip the mattress with the seasons to get the right sleeping temperature year round.

- Real room for one: At 120cm wide, the UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, which means a solo sleeper can spread out rather than sleeping in a lane.
- Fits a compact double bedroom: It is 15cm narrower than the UK double, so a box room, studio or loft conversion keeps walking space beside the bed.
- Easier to flip at this width: The Byron needs turning between its winter and summer sides, and a 4ft mattress is noticeably more manageable to flip alone than a wider one.
- Firm support across the full width: The high-density micro and Cortec pocket springs contour to your shape wherever you settle, so the extra width is genuinely usable, edge to edge.
- Standard 4ft bedding: The small double is a standard UK size, so fitted sheets and frames are easy to find, and a normal double duvet works fine on top.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone, have outgrown a UK single and want room to sprawl without buying more bed than the room can hold. Or your bedroom is compact, perhaps a loft conversion or a studio, and a UK double would leave no standing room beside the bed. It also works for a guest room where a couple stays occasionally rather than nightly.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed every night and the room can take another 15cm of width. In that case we'd recommend the UK double instead, allowing at least 2.6m x 2.8m of floor space for it.

What size is the Harrison Spinks Byron small double?
The UK small double Byron measures 120 x 190cm, which is 4ft x 6ft 3in. That makes it 30cm wider than the UK single and 15cm narrower than the UK double, with the same 190cm length as both. We suggest a room of at least 2.4m x 2.8m to fit it comfortably.
Is the Byron small double big enough for a couple?
For occasional nights, yes. At 120cm wide it gives two people less space each than a UK double, and the Byron's firm feel means you notice the squeeze rather than sinking towards the middle. For nightly sharing we'd point you to the UK double or UK king pages instead. As a guest room bed for visiting couples, it works well.
Is the small double Byron hard to flip seasonally?
The Byron is a dual-sided mattress you turn between its winter wool side and summer cotton side, and at 4ft wide the small double is one of the easier sizes to manage. It is still a deep, substantial mattress with natural fillings, so take it slowly, but one person can usually flip this size without help.
Will a small double fit in a box room or loft conversion?
Usually, yes, and that is largely the point of this size. At 120cm wide it leaves roughly the walking and door clearance that a 135cm UK double removes. Measure your room against our suggested minimum of 2.4m x 2.8m, and check where the door swings and any sloping ceiling sits before committing.
Should I buy the Byron in a small double or a double?
Choose the UK small double if you sleep alone or the room is tight: it is 15cm narrower than the UK double, and both are the same length. Choose the UK double if two of you share most nights and the room offers at least 2.6m x 2.8m. Compare the retailers listed on each page, as prices are updated as retailers change them.
