Layer Details
- Cover. A breathable Belgian damask cover, woven without FR chemicals. That means fire safety is achieved through the fabric itself rather than chemical treatments.
- Egyptian Cotton. A generous layer of super fine Egyptian cotton strands gives a soft, plush sleep surface. It also wicks moisture, which means you stay cool and dry through the night.
- British Wool and Flax Blend. A blend of British wool and flax that breathes well and helps regulate temperature. The wool is traceable, collected from Harrison Spinks' own Yorkshire farm.
- Viscose Wool. Viscose wool derived from the wood pulp of eucalyptus, beech and pine trees. It adds another breathable, temperature-regulating layer to the fillings.
- Micro Springs. Two layers of in-house designed micro springs that contour to your body much like foam. They offer support and relief that adapt to your individual shape.
- Cortec™ Pocket Springs. Glue-free Cortec pocket springs that support your pressure points and adapt to changes in your weight as you move. In practice, that means consistent pressure relief whichever position you settle into.

- A proper mattress in a child's room: Wool, cotton and flax fillings breathe well, which means a growing child or teenager sleeps cooler than they would on a cheap foam single.
- Fits the smallest bedrooms: At 90cm wide, it leaves room for a desk, wardrobe and floor space in a compact room or under a loft conversion's slope.
- Guest-ready quality: Pocket springs adapt to whoever visits, so a spare room that doubles as an office can still offer guests genuinely good support.
- Medium tension for changing sleepers: The medium feel suits most people, useful when the same bed serves a growing teen one year and visiting relatives the next.
- Cheap, easy bedding: Standard single sheets and a 135 x 200cm duvet fit, the most widely stocked and affordable bedding of any UK size.
This size suits you if...
You're furnishing a child's or teenager's room and want a mattress that will last them years rather than a stopgap, you sleep alone and would rather spend on quality than on width you won't use, or you're setting up a guest room or spare-room office where a 90cm footprint is all the space allows.
Consider another size if...
You're an adult who spreads out in the night, or the bed might sometimes sleep two. We'd recommend the UK small double instead: it's 30cm wider, the same length, and we suggest allowing at least 2.4m x 2.8m for it.

Is the Durham 6950 in a UK single a good choice for a child?
Yes, with one caveat. The natural fillings breathe well and the medium tension supports a growing body without feeling hard, so it works from later childhood through the teenage years. It's a serious spend for a child's room, though, so it makes most sense if you want the mattress to last them a decade rather than a phase.
Will the UK single Durham 6950 fit a bunk or mid-sleeper frame?
The 90 x 190cm footprint matches standard UK bunk and mid-sleeper frames, but check the depth. At 28cm this is a tall mattress, and many raised frames specify a maximum so the guard rail still sits safely above the sleep surface. Measure your frame's stated limit before ordering, especially for a top bunk.
What room size do I need for a UK single mattress?
We suggest allowing at least 2.1m x 2.8m of floor space, which is comfortably achievable in most box rooms, lofts and shared children's bedrooms. That leaves enough clearance to walk alongside the bed and open drawers or a wardrobe. If you're fitting the bed under a sloped ceiling, check standing height on the access side too.
Is a UK single big enough for an adult to sleep on every night?
At 90cm wide it's fine for most solo adults, particularly if you sleep fairly still. If you're broad-shouldered, tall or tend to sprawl, the UK small double gives you 30cm more width at the same length, and we suggest at least 2.4m x 2.8m of floor space for it.
Can the UK single be carried up narrow stairs?
The Durham 6950 arrives flat rather than rolled, so it can't be squeezed round corners the way a boxed mattress can. The single is the most manoeuvrable size in the range, which helps, but measure your stairwell, landings and door frames against 90 x 190cm before ordering, particularly for lofts and attic rooms.
