Comfort fillings
Layers of natural British wool sit at the top, shaping around your body as you settle. Wool is naturally breathable, so it cushions without trapping heat.
Comfort fillings blend
Beneath the wool sits a blend of British wool, hemp and flax. This mix helps regulate temperature, which means you're less likely to be woken by warm nights or cold snaps.
Comfort fillings blend
A further blend of cotton, hemp and flax fibres adds soft, breathable padding. It keeps the comfort layers airy rather than dense.
Support system
700 Cortec™ Quad springs, encased in cloth pockets and secured in groups of four, form the core. They respond to your weight, shape and movement individually, so support adjusts to you rather than the person next to you.
Mini springs
15,800 mini springs deliver a slightly bouncy comfort layer with small pockets for airflow throughout the mattress. They add responsiveness where foam layers would simply compress.

- Fits compact rooms: At 90cm wide it slots into box rooms, loft conversions with a narrow flat ceiling strip, and spare rooms that also hold a desk, so allow at least 2.1m x 2.8m.
- Natural fillings for a growing sleeper: British wool, hemp and flax regulate temperature better than foam, useful in small rooms that warm up quickly overnight.
- Soft to medium feel suits lighter bodies: The gentler surface tends to work well for lighter single sleepers, including teens, who often sink too little into firmer beds to feel any cushioning.
- Guest room comfort without the double footprint: Two UK singles can share a guest room with a walkway between them, something a double rarely allows in the same space.
- Full-count spring system in a single: You get the complete 16,500-spring build in this size, so a solo sleeper enjoys the same responsive, individually adjusting support as the larger sizes.
This size suits you if...
You're a single adult, teenager or older child who'll sleep on this mattress every night and you want natural fillings rather than foam, or you're furnishing a guest room where visitors stay often enough to justify a premium mattress, or your bedroom is small and a 90cm-wide bed is the only way to keep floor space for a desk or wardrobe.
Consider another size if...
You're an adult who moves around at night and finds 90cm restrictive, or you occasionally share the bed. We'd recommend the UK small double instead: it's 30cm wider, the same length, and needs a room of at least 2.4m x 2.8m.

Will the Emerald 16500 UK single fit a bunk bed or mid sleeper?
Be careful here. This mattress is 29cm deep, which is deeper than many raised frames allow: bunk beds in particular need the mattress to sit well below the guard rail. Measure from the base to the rail top before buying, and check the frame maker's maximum mattress depth. For a standard divan or bedstead, the UK single fits without issue.
Is a UK single big enough for an adult?
For one adult, usually yes. At 90 x 190cm it's the standard UK one-person size, and the soft to medium feel means lighter adults settle into the comfort layers rather than lying on top of them. If you're tall, note the 190cm length; the UK king is 10cm longer if you regularly find your feet at the edge.
How much room do I need for the Emerald 16500 in a UK single?
We suggest at least 2.1m x 2.8m of floor space. That leaves enough clearance to walk round the bed and open a wardrobe, which matters in a child's room where the bed competes with toy storage and a desk. Two singles in a guest room need more, so measure with a walkway between the beds in mind.
Is the UK single Emerald 16500 a good choice for a child's room?
It's a strong fit for older children and teens. The soft to medium feel suits lighter sleepers, and the wool, hemp and flax fillings breathe well in small rooms that get warm. It's a premium spend for a child's bed, so it makes most sense if they'll use it for many years on a standard frame rather than a cabin bed.
Should a teenager have a UK single or size up to the UK small double?
If the room allows it, the UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single and the same length, giving a growing teen more space to spread out; allow at least 2.4m x 2.8m for it. Where the bedroom also holds a desk and storage, the UK single usually keeps the room workable.
