Layer Details
- Damask cover. A damask cover that's soft to the touch. It's the traditional choice for a handcrafted mattress and feels pleasingly plush under a sheet.
- Wool comfort layer. Layers of British wool blended with hemp and flax fibres sit directly beneath the cover. Wool regulates temperature naturally, which means it helps you stay warm in winter and cooler in summer.
- Cotton, hemp and flax blend. A cotton, hemp and flax blend is layered throughout the mattress. These natural fibres add breathability and a slightly springy, resilient comfort that foam can't quite match.
- Cortec Quad springs. 700 Cortec Quad springs, with groups of four springs placed within a single fabric pocket. More springs per pocket means finer, more localised support as you change position.
- Posturfil springs. 1800 mini Posturfil springs designed with flexibility in mind, adapting with your body as you move through the night. In practice that means less resistance when you roll over.
- Mini springs. 10000 bouncy mini springs create pockets of airflow throughout the mattress. That built-in ventilation helps keep the natural fillings fresh over time and adds a little extra cushioning.

- The traditional couples' size: At 135cm wide, the UK double gives two people 67.5cm each, enough for most couples who sleep close rather than sprawled.
- Fits where a king won't: The UK double is 15cm narrower and 10cm shorter than the UK king, which often means space for bedside tables on both sides.
- Room to allow for: We suggest at least 2.6m x 2.8m, so the wardrobe and drawers most bedrooms need can still open properly.
- Natural fillings for two: Wool, hemp, flax and cotton breathe better than foam, which matters more when two bodies share 135cm of mattress overnight.
- Bedding is easy: Double sheets and duvets are sold everywhere at every price, so dressing this size costs less effort than the larger UK king.
This size suits you if...
You share the bed every night and your room sits comfortably around the 2.6m x 2.8m minimum we suggest, or you sleep alone and want space to stretch out, perhaps with a pet claiming a corner. It also suits a guest room that regularly hosts visiting couples, where the soft to medium feel will please most side sleepers without dominating the space.
Consider another size if...
You and your partner both like to spread out, or one of you is a restless sleeper; 67.5cm each can feel snug. We'd recommend the UK king instead, allowing a room of at least 2.7m x 2.9m.

Is the Ruby 12500 in a UK double big enough for a couple?
For most couples, yes. The UK double gives 67.5cm of width each, which suits people who sleep fairly close. The soft to medium feel offers gentle pressure relief for side sleepers, although if either of you moves around a lot at night, the UK king's extra 15cm of width is a meaningful upgrade.
What room size do I need for the Ruby 12500 UK double?
We suggest at least 2.6m x 2.8m, with around 3m x 3m the comfortable norm. That allows bedside tables on both sides and space for a wardrobe door to open. If your room is larger than about 2.7m x 2.9m, a UK king becomes a realistic option too.
Should I choose the Ruby 12500 in a UK double or a UK king?
The UK double is 15cm narrower and 10cm shorter than the UK king. Choose the UK double if your room is close to our 2.6m x 2.8m suggested minimum, or you want cheaper, easier-to-find bedding. Couples who value personal space and have a room of at least 2.7m x 2.9m should size up.
Will a UK double Ruby 12500 get up the stairs in an older house?
Being a sprung mattress with natural fillings rather than foam, it doesn't roll into a box, so measure turning points on stairs and landings before ordering. At 135 x 190cm it's a manageable size for two people to carry, and noticeably easier round tight corners than the UK king or UK super king.
Is the UK double Ruby 12500 good for a guest room?
It's a sensible guest room choice because it accommodates visiting couples as well as solo guests, and the soft to medium feel suits a wide range of sleepers for short stays. It's a premium spend for occasional use, so compare the retailers listed on this page, where prices update as they change.
