- Proper spreading room for one: At 30cm wider than a UK single, and the same length, it gives a solo adult space to roll and stretch without touching the edges.
- Fits rooms a UK double crowds: It's 15cm narrower than a UK double, which can be the difference between a door that clears and one that doesn't in a box room.
- A sensible step up for a growing teenager: When a teenager has outgrown a UK single but their room can't spare the floor space a UK double demands, 4ft is the practical middle ground.
- Standard 4ft bedding and frames: The UK small double is a standard UK size, so fitted sheets and frames are easy to find, and a standard double duvet works fine on top.
- Comfortable for a guest room: Solo guests get generous space and visiting couples can manage the odd night, which suits a small second bedroom or holiday let nicely.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone and want noticeably more width than a UK single, your bedroom is compact and 120cm is the widest mattress the room can sensibly take, or you're furnishing a guest room or rental where couples stay occasionally rather than every night. Allow at least 2.4m x 2.8m of floor space, which is our suggestion, so the room still works around the bed.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed every night, because a UK small double leaves two adults slightly short on personal space. We'd recommend the UK double instead, which is 15cm wider and the same length, if your room can take it.

Is the Highgrove Bristol Ortho Crib 5 available in a UK small double?
Yes, the UK small double is one of six sizes this mattress comes in, at 120 x 190cm. Stock varies, so compare the retailers listed on this page for current availability. Because Highgrove publishes little detail on construction and firmness for this model, read the retailer's full listing before ordering.
What room size do I need for a UK small double mattress?
We suggest allowing at least 2.4m x 2.8m. That gives you space to open the door fully, walk around the bed and fit a wardrobe or chest of drawers without squeezing past. In a loft conversion, also check where the ceiling slopes, since a 120cm-wide bed needs standing room on at least one side.
How much bigger is the UK small double than a UK single?
The UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, and both are the same length at 190cm. That extra width is what makes it appealing for a solo adult, or a teenager who has outgrown a single, without taking up the full footprint a UK double would need.
Will this mattress in a UK small double work for a couple?
For occasional nights, yes, which makes it a reasonable guest room choice. For every night, two adults will find 120cm a little tight, and we'd recommend the UK double of this mattress instead. Bear in mind the firmness of this model isn't published, so heavier couples in particular should check with the retailer first.
What bedding fits the UK small double version?
You'll need small double (4ft) fitted sheets, which are a standard UK size and widely stocked. A standard double duvet works well on top, since duvets are forgiving of the 15cm width difference. Highgrove doesn't publish a depth for this mattress, so check with the retailer before buying deep-pocket fitted sheets.
