- The classic shared size: At 135 x 190cm, the UK double is the long-established standard for two sleepers, which means it suits guest rooms and lets where visiting couples are the norm.
- Fits most UK bedrooms: We suggest allowing at least 2.6m x 2.8m, a footprint that leaves space for bedside tables on both sides in a typical room.
- 67.5cm each for two sharing: That per-person width is snug for restless sleepers, but it has served most couples well for decades.
- Crib 5 compliance in a versatile size: A contract fire rating in the UK double covers the room type landlords and holiday-let owners furnish most often.
- Bedding is easy and cheap: Double sheets and duvets are stocked everywhere at every price point, which keeps costs down when you're kitting out several rooms at once.
This size suits you if...
You're furnishing a guest room or rental where couples will share the bed, and you need Crib 5 compliance without giving the whole room over to the mattress. It also works if you're a solo sleeper who likes space to spread out, perhaps with a pet claiming a corner, or you're fitting out a whole property and the UK double keeps bedding and replacement costs predictable across rooms.
Consider another size if...
You and a partner both want more than 67.5cm of width each, and the room can take a larger bed. The UK king would suit you better, being 15cm wider and 10cm longer than the UK double.

How big is the Highgrove Canterbury in a UK double?
This size measures 135 x 190cm, or 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in. Two people sharing get 67.5cm of width each. For comparison, the UK double is 45cm wider than the UK single and 15cm narrower than the UK king, while sharing the UK single's 190cm length.
Is the UK double Canterbury big enough for a rental where couples stay?
Yes, it's the standard choice. The UK double has long been Britain's default couples' size, and the Canterbury's Crib 5 rating covers the fire compliance that lets and HMOs typically require. Couples wanting extra space would need the UK king, but for most guest rooms and rentals the UK double is the practical pick.
What room size do I need for a double Canterbury mattress?
We suggest allowing at least 2.6m x 2.8m, with around 3m x 3m the comfortable norm. That gives you walking space and room for bedside tables on both sides. In a smaller second bedroom already holding a wardrobe and drawers, measure carefully before committing; the UK small double is 15cm narrower if space is tight.
Should I buy this mattress in a UK double or a UK king?
It depends on the room and the sleepers. The UK king is 15cm wider and 10cm longer than the UK double, which matters for taller guests or couples who want more space each. In a typical UK bedroom, though, the UK double leaves more floor space and keeps bedding cheaper, which helps when furnishing several rooms.
What bedding fits the UK double Canterbury?
Standard double sheets and a 200 x 200cm double duvet. This is the most widely stocked bedding size in the UK, available at every price level, so replacing linen across a rental or guest house stays simple and inexpensive. Bedding for the UK king or UK super king costs noticeably more, which adds up across multiple rooms.
