Outer cover
A polyester/viscose fabric with a deep quilted finish that holds the cover to the layers beneath. It's a durable, fully upholstered surface, which suits a mattress that will see regular use.
White fibre fillings
A lightweight, high-loft fibre that keeps its shape. It gives the surface a soft-to-medium cushioning without the weight of a dense foam.
Bonnell open coil spring core
A 13.5-gauge bonnell open coil system, with rows of springs running head to toe, joined by helical wire and edged with 6-gauge rod-edge wire. This gives a traditional springy support, and the wire edge helps the sides keep their shape. The mattress is double-sided, so you can flip and rotate it.

- The standard one-person footprint: At 90 x 190cm, the UK single is the default size for children's rooms, student lets and guest beds, so it slots into existing frames without surprises.
- Suited to buying in multiples: A contract mattress in the most common size makes sense for landlords kitting out several rooms, from HMO bedrooms to a guest house with twin rooms.
- Leaves floor space free: A 3ft-wide bed keeps room for a desk, wardrobe and toy storage in a child's bedroom, or two beds plus a walkway where siblings share.
- Cheap, easy bedding: Single sheets and a standard 135 x 200cm single duvet are the most widely stocked bedding of any size, which matters when you're dressing several beds.
- Check the depth for raised frames: Highgrove doesn't publish full spec detail, so confirm the depth with the retailer before pairing it with a bunk or mid sleeper.
This size suits you if...
You're furnishing rented rooms, a student let or a guest house and need the standard one-person size across several bedrooms, or you want a low-cost single for a spare room that doubles as an office. It also fits compact spaces well: allow at least 2.1m x 2.8m and the 90 x 190cm footprint will sit comfortably under a loft slope or alongside a desk.
Consider another size if...
Two people will ever share the bed, or a single adult wants real room to stretch out. We'd recommend the UK double of the Durham for couples, or the UK small double where the room is tight.

What size is the Highgrove Durham UK single?
The UK single measures 90 x 190cm, which is 3ft x 6ft 3in. That's the standard UK one-person size, so it fits standard single bed frames, divans and most bunk and cabin beds, though we'd suggest confirming the mattress depth with the retailer before using it on a raised frame with a safety rail.
Is the Durham Crib 5 in a UK single a good choice for rental properties?
It's the size most rental settings need. The UK single suits HMO rooms, student lets and twin guest rooms, and a contract mattress is designed for exactly that market. Buying one model in one size across several rooms also simplifies bedding, since single sheets and duvets are the cheapest and easiest to replace.
How much space does a UK single need in a child's bedroom?
We suggest allowing at least 2.1m x 2.8m of floor space. Because the mattress is only 90cm wide, that usually leaves room for a wardrobe, a desk and toy storage in an average child's room, and two UK singles with a walkway between them can work where siblings share a larger room.
How much narrower is the UK single Durham than the double?
The UK single is 45cm narrower than the UK double, and the two are the same length at 190cm. If a room needs to sleep one adult with more space to spread out, the UK single is 30cm narrower than the UK small double, again with no difference in length.
Will the UK single Durham fit a bunk bed or mid sleeper?
The 90 x 190cm footprint is the standard size bunk and mid-sleeper frames are built around, so the width and length will fit. The depth is the unknown: Highgrove doesn't publish it, and raised frames have safety limits, so ask the retailer for the depth before you buy.
