- Real space for one: At 120cm across, the UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, which means a solo sleeper can change position freely without meeting the edge.
- Fits rooms a double crowds: It is 15cm narrower than the UK double, and in a box room or loft conversion that margin often decides whether you can still walk past the bed.
- Suited to lets and guest rooms: This is a contract-specification model, the type commonly used in guest houses and rental properties, which fits how a small double is often bought: for occasional visitors, not nightly couples.
- Standard 4ft bedding: The small double is an established UK size, so fitted sheets and frames are easy to find on the high street rather than by special order.
- Familiar length: At 190cm long it matches the UK single and UK double, so moving up from either size changes width only, and most adults fit comfortably.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone and have outgrown a UK single but your room can't spare the width a UK double needs, you're furnishing a small second bedroom in a rental or holiday let where couples stay occasionally, or a teenager needs a bigger bed without losing all the floor space around it.
Consider another size if...
Two of you will share the bed every night and the room has space to spare. The UK double gives 15cm more width, which matters over years of nightly sharing, so we'd recommend the UK double instead.

What size is the Highgrove Lancaster in a UK small double?
It measures 120 x 190cm, which is 4ft x 6ft 3in. That makes it 30cm wider than the UK single and 15cm narrower than the UK double, with all three sharing the same 190cm length. Depth isn't confirmed in the detail Highgrove publishes, so check the retailer's listing if clearance under a headboard matters.
What room size do I need for a small double bed?
We suggest allowing at least 2.4m x 2.8m. That's our own guidance rather than the manufacturer's, and it leaves enough room to open the door, walk round the bed and fit a chest of drawers. In a loft conversion, also check where the sloping ceiling starts before committing to this footprint.
Is the UK small double a good choice for a holiday let bedroom?
Often, yes. The Lancaster is a contract-specification mattress, the kind built for guest houses and rentals, and the small double suits a second bedroom where couples stay for a night or two rather than living there. It reads as a proper double to guests while leaving usable space in a smaller room.
Should I get the small double or size up to the UK double?
Measure the room first. The UK small double is 15cm narrower than the UK double, and in a compact bedroom that gap can be the difference between a door that clears the bed and one that doesn't. If the room takes a UK double comfortably and two of you share nightly, size up.
Where can I compare prices for the Highgrove Lancaster small double?

Stock for contract models can move around, so if this size shows limited availability it's worth checking back rather than assuming it's gone.
