- Room for two without dominating the bedroom: At 135cm wide, the UK double gives couples a genuine shared bed while leaving space for wardrobes and drawers in a typical room.
- 67.5cm each for two people sharing: That's the width each of you gets, which is comfortable for most couples, although restless or broad-shouldered sleepers may feel the edges.
- Fits rooms a UK king would crowd: We suggest allowing at least 2.6m x 2.8m, which means bedside tables on both sides remain realistic in a standard room.
- Bedding is cheap and everywhere: Double sheets and a 200 x 200cm duvet are stocked at every price point, which keeps dressing the bed simple and inexpensive.
- A sensible step up for a solo sleeper: The UK double is 45cm wider than the UK single at the same length, so a lone sleeper, plus a dog claiming a corner, gets real spreading-out room.
This size suits you if...
You share the bed as a couple in a typical UK bedroom and want the established two-person size, you're furnishing a guest room that needs to take visiting couples comfortably, or you sleep alone and want noticeably more width than a UK single without a bigger frame and pricier bedding.
Consider another size if...
Your room comfortably exceeds 3m x 3m and you both want more personal space than 67.5cm each. We'd recommend the UK king instead, which is 15cm wider and 10cm longer than the UK double.

How big is the Highgrove Lancaster Pocket 2000 in a UK double?
The UK double measures 135 x 190cm, which is 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in. It fits any standard UK double bed frame. Highgrove doesn't publish a depth or weight for this mattress, so check with the retailer listed on this page if you need those figures for a divan or bunk.
Is the UK double Lancaster wide enough for a couple?
For most couples, yes. You get 67.5cm each for two people sharing, which is the width British couples have managed on for decades. If either of you moves around a lot at night, or you're both on the taller or broader side, the extra width and length of a UK king may be a better fit.
What room size do I need for this mattress in a UK double?
Allow at least 2.6m x 2.8m, with around 3m x 3m the comfortable norm. That's our guidance, not Highgrove's. In a second bedroom or a first flat, the UK double usually still leaves room for a wardrobe and a chest of drawers, though measure with door swings in mind before ordering.
Should I buy this mattress in a UK double or a UK king?
It comes down to your room. The UK double is 15cm narrower and 10cm shorter than the UK king, so it suits rooms where a king would leave no space for bedside tables on both sides. If your room clears 3m x 3m comfortably and you share every night, the UK king is the roomier choice.
Will a UK double fit up the stairs in an older house?
A 135 x 190cm mattress will turn most staircases, including the tight landings in older terraces, more easily than a king. Highgrove doesn't publish the depth or flexibility of this model, so if your access is genuinely awkward, ask the retailer about handling before delivery day rather than after.
