Layer Details
- Knitted cover. A soft knitted finish that adds a touch of cosiness, which means the firm surface underneath doesn't feel harsh against you. It's designed for airflow and breathability, helpful if you tend to sleep warm.
- Memory foam layer. A 5cm layer of memory foam that adapts to your body and moulds around your shape. This is what softens the firm feel at pressure points like hips and shoulders.
- Soft white fibre layer. A small fibre layer that works with the tufted finish to smooth out the sleeping surface. You'll feel it as a slightly softer top rather than foam sitting straight on firm padding.
- Dense soft white fibre layer. Densely packed fibres that reinforce the firmness of the mattress. This is where the firm character really comes from, sitting between the comfort layers and the springs.
- Pocket springs. 1,500 individual springs encased in cloth pockets, so each one responds to your body independently and movement transfers less across the bed. Firmer springs on the outer rows, which Relyon calls Calibar Edge, limit dipping when you sit or sleep near the side.

- Room to sprawl on your own: At 30cm wider than the UK single, you can sleep diagonally or starfish on the firm surface without an arm hanging off the side.
- Leaves floor space free: Being 15cm narrower than the UK double, it can leave you enough clearance for a wardrobe door or a desk chair in a tight room.
- Firm edges help in narrow rooms: The firmer Calibar Edge springs on the outer rows limit dipping, which means you can sit on the side comfortably in a room too tight for a chair.
- Copes with an occasional guest couple: The 1,500 individually pocketed springs limit movement travelling across the bed, so two guests sharing for a weekend are less likely to disturb each other.
- A modest room requirement: We suggest allowing at least 2.4m x 2.8m, which brings a firm double-width bed within reach of many second bedrooms and loft conversions.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone, like firm support and want more width than a UK single allows, or you're furnishing a compact guest room or loft conversion where couples stay only now and then.
Consider another size if...
You and a partner will share the bed every night. We'd recommend the UK double instead, which gives 67.5cm each for two sharing; allow at least 2.6m x 2.8m for it.

Is the Relyon Rufford UK small double a good upgrade from a single for a teenager?
For a teenager who has outgrown a single, it's a sensible step up. The UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single and the same length, so you gain width without the bed reaching further into the room. We suggest at least 2.4m x 2.8m for the UK small double, compared with 2.1m x 2.8m for the UK single.
What size bedroom do I need for a Relyon Rufford small double?
We suggest allowing at least 2.4m x 2.8m for the UK small double. That leaves room to walk around the bed and open drawers. If your room is smaller, the UK single needs at least 2.1m x 2.8m. The mattress itself measures 120 x 190cm, or 4ft x 6ft 3in.
Can a couple sleep on the Relyon Rufford small double every night?
It's fine for occasional stays, and the pocket springs help limit disturbance when one of you moves. For nightly sharing, though, most couples will be more comfortable on the UK double, which gives 67.5cm each for two sharing. The UK double needs at least 2.6m x 2.8m, according to our room guidance.
Will a Relyon Rufford small double fit in a loft conversion?
It often suits loft rooms better than wider sizes, because being 15cm narrower than the UK double can leave you usable standing space beside the bed where the ceiling slopes. Measure your full-height floor area against our suggested 2.4m x 2.8m. Remember the sloping sections too.
Is the Relyon Rufford small double long enough for a tall person?
At 190cm (6ft 3in), the UK small double is the same length as the UK double. The UK king is 10cm longer, so if your feet already reach the end of a standard bed, the UK king is worth considering. It needs at least 2.7m x 2.9m, according to our room guidance.
