Layer Details
Cover
A cotton-rich cover sits on top. Cotton is breathable, which means it helps the sleep surface stay a little cooler than fully synthetic fabrics.
Cushion layer
A dense cushion layer provides comfort to an already firm mattress. In practice, that means a touch of give at the surface before you reach the firmer support beneath.
Spring unit
The spring unit forms the supportive core of the mattress. This is where the firm, orthopaedic-style feel comes from.
Layer details from mattressman.co.uk product page, September 2026.
- A firm feel across the full shared width: Pocket springs support each side of the 135cm width independently, which means one partner's weight is less likely to tilt the other out of position.
- Fits most UK bedrooms: We suggest a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m for a UK double, which leaves space for a wardrobe and a walkway in most rooms.
- Room for bedside tables on both sides: In an average sized room the UK double usually leaves enough wall either side for a table each, something a UK king often rules out.
- Easy to dress: Double sheets and 200 x 200cm duvets are stocked everywhere at every price point, so replacing bedding never becomes a hunt.
- A sensible guest room size: An extra firm surface divides opinion less than a plush one, and the UK double comfortably sleeps the visiting couples a guest room needs to handle.
This size suits you if...
You share the bed and want the traditional couples' size in a room where a UK king would dominate, you both prefer a firm, supportive surface, or you're furnishing a guest room that needs to sleep two visiting adults without swallowing the space.
Consider another size if...
You and your partner keep waking each other, or one of you sleeps diagonally. The UK king is 15cm wider and 10cm longer; allow at least 2.7m x 2.9m and we'd recommend it instead.

Is the Legend Ortho in a UK double firm enough for a couple?
The extra firm feel doesn't change with size, but the UK double gives two sharers 67.5cm each, and the pocket spring core supports each of you independently across that width. Heavier partners are less likely to create a dip the other rolls into, which is one reason firmer beds suit sharers.
Will a UK double Legend Ortho fit my bedroom with tables both sides?
The mattress is 135 x 190cm, and we suggest a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m. In a room around that size or a little larger, a UK double usually leaves enough wall on each side for bedside tables, which is often the deciding factor against sizing up to a UK king.
Should I get the Legend Ortho in a double or a small double?
For two people sharing every night, the UK double. It is 15cm wider than the UK small double, and both are the same length, so the extra width all goes to sleeping space. If your room is tight, allow at least 2.4m x 2.8m for the UK small double and treat it as an occasional couples' size.
Is the UK double Legend Ortho a good guest room mattress?
It works well for a guest room that hosts couples, since 135 x 190cm sleeps two adults and its extra firm feel tends to be tolerable for a few nights even for guests who normally prefer softer beds. Lightweight side sleepers staying long term may find it a little unforgiving, though.
Can a double mattress get up the stairs in an older house?
At 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in, a UK double is the largest size that turns most tight staircases in older terraces without a struggle, and pocket spring mattresses flex a little on the turn. Measure your narrowest landing before ordering, and compare the retailers listed on this page for delivery options.
