Pocket springs
1000 Cortec Quad Revolution springs sit in cloth pockets and are grouped in fours, with mini springs inside the regular springs. This is the main support layer, so it is what gives the mattress its firm, held-up feel.
Mini pocket springs
A layer of 1000 Posturfil springs, plus an extra 7500 mini springs, sits above the main springs for contouring. It adds some shape-following give on top of the firm support below.
Wool, hemp and flax blend layer
Layers of wool, hemp and flax are blended to improve breathability. Air can move through the mattress more easily, which helps if you tend to feel the heat at night.
Cotton, hemp and flax layer
An extra layer of cotton, hemp and flax wicks moisture away. That should help the surface feel drier and fresher while you sleep.
Wool comfort layer
The top layer is 100% traceable British wool, which gives a plush surface. It softens the feel at the top, though the mattress overall is still firm.

- Made for typical UK bedrooms: At 135 x 190cm, the UK double fits where a UK king would dominate, so we suggest allowing at least 2.6m x 2.8m of floor space.
- 67.5cm each when sharing: Two people get 67.5cm each for two people sharing, and the pocket springs move independently, which means less disturbance when your partner turns over.
- Firm support for two: A firm feel resists the dip that can form between two sleepers, which means back and front sleepers stay level rather than rolling together.
- Room for bedside tables: The 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in footprint usually leaves space for a table on each side, something a UK king can rule out in a smaller room.
- Easy to dress: Standard double sheets and a 200 x 200cm double duvet are stocked everywhere at every price, handy if you're furnishing a whole home at once.
This size suits you if...
You share the bed every night and want the classic couples' size without giving up floor space, or you sleep alone and want proper room to spread out, perhaps with a dog or cat claiming a corner. It also makes sense for a guest room that hosts visiting couples, provided they'll suit a firm feel.
Consider another size if...
Your bedroom comfortably exceeds 3m x 3m and you and your partner both like space, since the UK double is 15cm narrower and 10cm shorter than the UK king. We'd recommend the UK king instead, allowing at least 2.7m x 2.9m.

Is the Harrison Spinks Gold 9500 double big enough for two firm-mattress sleepers?
Yes, with a caveat. You each get 67.5cm each for two people sharing, and the firm pocket springs keep the surface level rather than letting you roll together. If either of you is a lightweight side sleeper, though, the feel itself may press on shoulder and hip, which matters more than the width.
What room size do I need for the Gold 9500 in a UK double?
We suggest at least 2.6m x 2.8m, with around 3m x 3m the comfortable norm. That leaves you space to open wardrobe doors and walk round the bed. At 135 x 190cm, the UK double is the size to pick when a UK king would leave the room feeling cramped.
Should I get the Gold 9500 in a double or a king?
It comes down to your room and how much space you each want. The UK double is 15cm narrower and 10cm shorter than the UK king, and the UK king needs at least 2.7m x 2.9m by our reckoning. If your room allows it and you both like room to stretch, size up; otherwise the UK double is the safer fit.
Will a UK double Gold 9500 get up the stairs in an older house?
A traditional pocket spring mattress doesn't arrive rolled in a box, so measure the awkward points before ordering: turning stairs in older terraces and tight new build landings catch people out. The mattress is 135cm wide and 190cm long, so check those figures against your narrowest turn.
Is the double Gold 9500 a good choice for a guest room?
It can be, since the UK double suits visiting couples and the 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in footprint fits most spare rooms alongside a wardrobe and drawers. Bear in mind the firm feel, which not every guest will love, and compare the retailers listed on this page, as prices shown here update as retailers change them.
