Layer Details
Wool and hemp blended fibres
The top layer is a blend of wool and hemp fibres, chosen for enhanced breathability. For you, that should mean a surface that lets heat and moisture escape more easily, which helps if you tend to run warm in bed.
Pocket springs
Beneath the fibres sit 9500 individually wrapped springs, under temperature-regulating wool and hemp. Because each spring works on its own, the mattress can respond to your body in separate areas, and it gives the medium feel its support.

- The classic couples' footprint: At 135 x 190cm, the UK double is the long-established shared size, so it works in rooms where a larger bed would leave you squeezing past corners.
- Pocket springs suit sharing: The springs move independently, which means a partner turning over on their side is less likely to disturb you on yours.
- Room for bedside tables: We suggest a minimum room of 2.6m x 2.8m, which in most UK bedrooms still leaves space for tables on both sides.
- Bedding is easy and cheap to find: Standard double sheets and a 200 x 200cm double duvet are stocked everywhere, so dressing the bed costs less than for larger sizes.
- A safe middle firmness for two: The medium feel sits between soft and firm, a useful compromise when two people with different sleeping positions share one mattress.
This size suits you if...
You share the bed every night and your room is a typical UK size rather than a spacious master, or you sleep alone and want space to stretch out, perhaps with a dog or cat claiming a corner. It also suits a guest room that hosts visiting couples, where the bed needs to work for two without dominating the space.
Consider another size if...
You and your partner both want more personal space than 67.5cm each for two people sharing allows. We'd recommend the UK king instead, which is 15cm wider and 10cm longer; allow at least 2.7m x 2.9m for it.

Is the Sanctuary 9500 in a UK double big enough for two adults?
It works for most couples, with the caveat that a UK double gives 67.5cm each for two people sharing, which is less than a single per person. The pocket springs help, since one sleeper's movement transfers less to the other. If either of you is broad-shouldered or a restless sleeper, the UK king is the roomier option.
What room size do I need for the Sanctuary 9500 double?
We suggest allowing at least 2.6m x 2.8m, with around 3m x 3m the comfortable norm. That guidance is ours rather than the manufacturer's. At the minimum you'll still fit a wardrobe and bedside tables in most layouts, which is why the UK double remains the default for typical British bedrooms.
Should I get the Sanctuary 9500 in a UK double or a UK king?
It usually comes down to your room. The UK double is 15cm narrower and 10cm shorter than the UK king, and needs less floor space, so it suits rooms where a king would crowd the furniture. If you have at least 2.7m x 2.9m and share every night, the extra width of the UK king is genuinely useful.
Will a double mattress get up the stairs in an older house?
A UK double is generally the easiest shared size to move in, and it copes with the turning stairs of older terraces and tight new build landings better than a UK king or super king. Pocket spring mattresses don't roll or fold, though, so measure your stairwell and any awkward corners before ordering.
