- Stitchbond Cover. A hard-wearing polyester fabric with a quilted finish, which keeps costs down without feeling flimsy. The stitching attaches the outer fabric to the surface fillings, which means a flat, even sleeping surface rather than one that shifts about.
- White Fibre Fillings. A lightweight, high-loft filling that's hypoallergenic and holds its shape well. You get a soft initial feel, and the fibres are designed to keep their comfort over time.
- Open Coil Springs. Rows of hourglass-shaped springs joined at the top and bottom by a spiral helical wire, an interconnected system that's durable and gives a traditional bouncy feel. Because the springs are linked, movement does transfer across the bed more than it would with pocket springs.
- Wire Edge Border. A thick wire runs around the perimeter of the spring unit, which means firmer edges and a longer-lasting mattress. It also helps you use the full width of the bed without the sides sagging.

- The traditional couples' size: At 135 x 190cm, that's 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in, the UK double is the long-established size for two, and it fits most British bedrooms comfortably.
- 67.5cm each when sharing: Two of you get 67.5cm each for two people sharing, enough for most couples, though restless pairs may prefer more.
- Firmer edges for two: The wire edge border keeps the perimeter supportive, which means you can both use the full 135cm width without the sides giving way.
- Room left over for furniture: We suggest a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m, which still leaves space for a wardrobe and bedside tables on both sides in most bedrooms.
- Easy to dress cheaply: Double sheets and 200 x 200cm duvets are stocked everywhere at every price point, which suits a mattress bought on a budget.
This size suits you if...
You're a couple wanting a straightforward shared bed in a typical UK bedroom, you're kitting out a guest room that visiting couples will use a few times a year, or you're furnishing a whole home and need a dependable double without a big outlay.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed every night with a restless partner, since the interconnected coils pass movement across a 135cm width where you're already close together. We'd recommend the UK king instead, which gives you both more space to absorb it.

Is the Highgrove Solar Comfort UK double big enough for a couple?
For most couples, yes. You each get 67.5cm each for two people sharing, and the wire edge border means the full width stays usable rather than sagging at the sides. One caveat: the open coil springs transfer movement, so if one of you fidgets, the other will feel it more at this width than on a UK king.
What room size do I need for the Highgrove Solar Comfort double?
We suggest a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m, with around 3m x 3m the more comfortable norm. The mattress itself is 135 x 190cm, and because this is the standard shared size rather than a king, most second bedrooms and older terraced houses will take it with bedside tables on both sides.
How much wider is the UK double than the UK small double?
The UK double is 15cm wider than the UK small double, and the UK double is 15cm narrower than the UK king. That middle position is why it suits typical UK bedrooms: proper sharing space without the footprint of a UK king, which can dominate a smaller room.
Is the double a good choice for a guest room?
It's arguably the ideal use for this mattress in this size. A UK double handles visiting couples and solo guests alike, and because the Solar Comfort is a budget open coil design with a medium feel, it makes sense for a bed slept in occasionally rather than every night.
