- Genuine space for one: The UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK Single, which means a solo sleeper can starfish without an elbow hanging off the edge.
- Fits rooms a double overwhelms: At 15cm narrower than the UK Double, it can leave walking space beside the bed in a box room or loft conversion where a 135cm mattress would not.
- A sensible teenager upgrade: For a teenager who has outgrown a single, this size adds real width while keeping enough floor space for a desk and wardrobe.
- Copes with occasional couple use: Two people can share it for a weekend stay, which makes it a practical pick for a guest room that hosts couples a few times a year.
- Easy to dress and frame: The 4ft size is a standard UK width, so small double frames, fitted sheets and bases are widely available.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone and want noticeably more room than a UK single gives you, your bedroom is too tight for a full double but you refuse to squeeze past the bed every morning, or you're furnishing a guest room or holiday let where couples stay occasionally rather than nightly.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed every night, because 120cm across two adults gets cramped over time. We'd recommend the UK double of the Highgrove Twin Comfort instead, or the UK king if your room allows it.

What room size do I need for the Highgrove Twin Comfort in a UK small double?
We suggest allowing at least 2.4m x 2.8m. That's our own guidance rather than Highgrove's, and it leaves enough space to open the door fully and walk down at least one side of the bed. In a loft conversion, check the sloping ceiling still gives you standing room beside the mattress.
Is the UK small double Highgrove Twin Comfort big enough for two people?
For the odd night, yes. Couples staying a weekend will manage comfortably enough, which is why this size suits guest rooms well. As an everyday bed for two adults it's a squeeze: at 120cm wide you'd each have less room than you would on a UK single. Solo sleepers are its natural audience.
How much bigger is the small double than a single in this mattress?
The UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, at 120cm against 90cm. Both share the same 190cm length. That extra width is the difference between sleeping in one fixed position and being able to sprawl, which is why it's a popular step up for teenagers and solo adults.
Should I choose the UK small double or the UK double of the Highgrove Twin Comfort?
It usually comes down to your room. The UK small double is 15cm narrower than the UK double, and that margin can decide whether a wardrobe door still opens or a bedside table fits. If you sleep alone, the small double is plenty. If a partner shares the bed most nights, size up.
What bedding fits the Highgrove Twin Comfort small double?
You'll need small double (4ft) fitted sheets, since standard double sheets will bag at the corners. A standard double duvet works fine on top and gives a little overhang on each side. Because 4ft is a standard UK size, small double bedding is easy to find on the high street and online.
