- The classic couples' footprint: At 135 x 190cm it gives two people a proper shared bed without dominating an average-sized room.
- 67.5cm each for two sharing: Each of you gets 67.5cm of width, which is enough for most couples, although restless sleepers may notice the difference against a UK king.
- Fits most UK bedrooms: We suggest a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m, which most British doubles, second bedrooms and first flats can manage with space for bedside tables.
- Boxed delivery suits awkward access: Because it arrives rolled in a box, getting it up a turning staircase in an older terrace or round a tight new build landing is far simpler.
- Easy to dress: Standard double sheets and a 200 x 200cm duvet fit, and both are stocked everywhere at every price point.
This size suits you if...
You're a couple furnishing a typical UK bedroom and want the standard shared size, you're kitting out a guest room that needs to sleep visiting couples comfortably, or you sleep alone and want genuine room to spread out, perhaps with a dog or cat claiming their usual corner.
Consider another size if...
Your room is smaller than our suggested 2.6m x 2.8m, or you're a couple with space to spare who'd value more width. We'd recommend the UK small double for tight rooms, or the UK king, which is 15cm wider and 10cm longer, allowing at least 2.7m x 2.9m.

Is the Highgrove Vernon in a UK double big enough for a couple?
For most couples, yes. The UK double gives 67.5cm each for two people sharing, which has been the British standard for decades. If one of you is broad-shouldered or a restless sleeper, the UK king adds 15cm of width and 10cm of length, provided your room allows at least 2.7m x 2.9m.
What room size do I need for the Highgrove Vernon UK double?
We suggest at least 2.6m x 2.8m, with around 3m x 3m the comfortable norm. That allows walking space and, in most rooms, bedside tables on both sides. If you're squeezing a bed, wardrobe and drawers into a first flat or second bedroom, measure carefully before committing, but a double fits where a king often won't.
Will the Highgrove Vernon UK double fit up narrow stairs?
It should be manageable. The mattress arrives rolled and compressed in a box, so instead of manoeuvring a full 135 x 190cm mattress around a turning staircase or a tight landing, you're carrying a much smaller package. That's a genuine advantage in older terraced houses and compact new builds where a flat delivery can be a struggle.
Should I choose the double or the small double for this mattress?
The UK double is 15cm wider than the UK small double, and both are the same length. For two people sharing regularly, we'd choose the UK double: that extra width matters night after night. The UK small double makes sense mainly for solo sleepers in rooms of at least 2.4m x 2.8m.
Is the UK double a good size for a guest room?
It's the safest choice. A double sleeps visiting couples without complaint and gives solo guests plenty of room, and because the size is so common, spare double bedding is cheap and easy to find. Just check the room meets our suggested 2.6m x 2.8m minimum once the wardrobe and drawers are in.
