Layer Details
Solotex™ comfort fibres
The top layer uses Solotex comfort fibres, recycled synthetic fibres that are breathable and durable. In practice this gives a soft initial feel that should resist flattening over time.
Wool fillings
Two plush fleeces of natural wool sit beneath, layered on top of the cotton fibres. Wool regulates temperature naturally, which means it helps keep you warm in winter and cooler in summer.
Cotton fillings
A deep layer of responsibly sourced cotton allows air to flow through the mattress. That airflow matters if you tend to sleep warm.
ReActivePro™ 7-turn pocket springs
1200 ReActivePro 7-turn pocket springs adapt to your unique shape for personalised, responsive support. Each spring moves independently, so your partner's movements are less likely to disturb you.
Layer details from mattressonline.co.uk product page, September 2026.
- Real room for one: At 120cm wide, a solo sleeper gets space to shift position freely, which matters on a medium soft mattress you settle into rather than lie on top of.
- Fits the compact double bedroom: The UK small double is 15cm narrower than the UK double, which can be the difference between a door that opens fully and one that doesn't.
- Gentle feel, sensible footprint: Side sleepers in box rooms or studio flats get the Banbury's soft pocket spring comfort without giving up their remaining floor space.
- Occasional couple use: For a guest room used by visiting couples a few nights a year, the 1200 pocket springs move independently, so two sharers disturb each other less.
- Standard 4ft sizing: The small double is an established UK size, so frames, fitted sheets and protectors are easy to find on the high street.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone and want more width than a UK single without committing a small room to a full double, or you're furnishing a guest room, loft conversion or second bedroom in a rental where couples stay occasionally rather than nightly. It also suits a teenager who has outgrown a single, provided they like a softer sleeping surface, in a room that can't spare much more floor space.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed every night and both of you like room to spread out. We'd recommend the UK double instead, which is 15cm wider and the same length; allow at least 2.6m x 2.8m of floor space for it.

What size is the Hypnos Banbury small double?
The UK small double is 120 x 190cm, which is 4ft x 6ft 3in. That gives you 30cm more width than the UK single at the same length, and it's 15cm narrower than the UK double. The Banbury itself is 26cm deep in every size, so check drawer clearance if your frame is an ottoman.
Is a small double Banbury big enough for a couple?
For occasional nights, yes. The 1200 pocket springs respond to each sleeper independently, so sharing for a weekend stay is comfortable enough. For every night, most couples find 120cm a squeeze, particularly on a medium soft mattress where you both settle in. The UK double, 15cm wider, is the better long-term choice for two.
What room size do I need for a small double mattress?
We suggest at least 2.4m x 2.8m for the UK small double, which leaves enough space to walk around the bed and open drawers. That's our own guidance rather than the manufacturer's. If your room comfortably exceeds 2.6m x 2.8m, the UK double becomes an option worth weighing up.
Where can I buy the Banbury Cotton Comfort in a small double?
Compare the retailers listed on this page. The prices shown here are live and updated as retailers change them, so it's worth checking back before you buy rather than relying on a figure you saw last week.
Is the small double Banbury good for a teenager's room?
It can be. A teenager who has outgrown a UK single gets 30cm more width without the room losing much floor space, since the length stays the same at 190cm. One caveat: the Banbury is medium soft, so it suits a young side sleeper better than someone who prefers a firm, flat surface.
