Layer Details
- Cover. Made from sustainably sourced natural cotton with a natural fire retardancy treatment. That means no chemical fire treatments next to your skin.
- Comfort layer. Hand tufted with British wool to create a smooth, sturdier surface. Tufting anchors the fillings in place, which means fewer lumps developing over time.
- Comfort fillings. Finely filled with sustainably sourced cotton fibres. These are highly breathable and wick away moisture, which helps you stay dry and comfortable overnight.
- Solotex™ layer. A recycled synthetic fibre spun to create a breathable, durable filling. It adds a soft, plush layer above the springs.
- eOlus™ fibres. Made from recycled plastic bottles, these bring extra comfort while reducing landfill waste. A small sustainability win baked into the build.
- Support system. 1200 ReActive 6-turn pocket springs, which means each spring responds to your body independently for even support. Rod edging around the unit firms up the perimeter.

- Real space for one: At 120cm across, the UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, which means a solo adult can stretch out properly.
- Fits compact rooms: It's 15cm narrower than the UK double, a difference that often decides whether a wardrobe door still opens or a walkway survives.
- Firm edges matter more at 4ft: Rod edging keeps the perimeter supportive, so on a narrower mattress you can use the full width without feeling you'll roll off the side.
- Cool for a snug room: British wool and cotton fillings breathe and wick moisture, useful in the smaller, warmer bedrooms this size usually ends up in.
- Handles occasional sharing: The 1200 pocket springs respond independently, so a couple staying the odd night won't disturb each other too much despite the tighter width.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone and have outgrown a single but your room can't take a full double, you're furnishing a guest room or holiday let where couples stay occasionally rather than nightly, or you're downsizing and the bed has to suit the new room's footprint. The medium firm feel adds to that: solo back and stomach sleepers get the most from it.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed most nights, because 120cm is a squeeze for two adults long term. We'd recommend the UK double instead, which is 15cm wider and needs a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m.

Is a small double big enough for a couple every night?
For occasional stays, yes. The independent pocket springs limit partner disturbance, and the rod edging lets each of you use the mattress right to its sides. For nightly sharing, though, 120cm is tight for two adults, and we'd point most couples to the UK double, which is 15cm wider.
What room size do I need for the Hypnos Burford Ortho Comfort small double?
We suggest at least 2.4m x 2.8m. That leaves enough clearance to walk round the bed and open drawers or doors. If your room is smaller than that, a UK single may serve you better; it's 30cm narrower and the same length, and needs at least 2.1m x 2.8m by our guidance.
Is the small double a good upgrade from a single for a teenager?
Often, yes. It adds 30cm of width at the same 190cm length, so a teenager past a single gains proper room to spread out without the bed swallowing the floor space. The medium firm feel suits growing backs that need level support, although lightweight side sleepers may find it slightly firm on shoulders.
Will this size fit in a loft conversion or box room?
That's where it tends to make sense. At 120cm wide it can leave standing room beside the bed where a 135cm double would not, and the difference can decide whether the door still clears. Measure your usable floor area against our suggested minimum of 2.4m x 2.8m before ordering.
Is the Hypnos Burford Ortho Comfort small double shorter than the king?
Yes. The UK small double is 10cm shorter than the UK king as well as 30cm narrower, so a taller sleeper trading down from a UK king will notice the length. Both are 190cm long like the UK single and UK double, which is fine for most adults.
