Layer Details
- Cover. A soft viscose cover that's naturally breathable, which means the sleep surface feels a little fresher against your skin. It's the first line of temperature control before you reach the fillings.
- Wool. Layers of wool sit just beneath the cover, giving cushioned comfort with natural insulation. Wool regulates temperature in both directions, so it helps in warm summers as well as cold winters.
- Cotton and Polyester Blend. Two layers of a cotton and polyester blend increase airflow through the mattress. They also wick moisture away from your body, which matters if you tend to sleep warm.
- eOlus™ Fibres. These fibres are made from recycled materials and spun into a slightly firmer, cushioning layer. They add to the extra firm feel while giving the mattress a sustainability credential.
- Soft White Fibres. Soft synthetic fillings bring a cosier feel to balance the firmness beneath. They're durable and resilient, so the comfort layer should hold its shape over time.
- Pocket Springs. 1000 ReActivePro™ springs, each in its own fabric pocket, respond to your body individually and reduce partner disturbance. Three outer rows of firmer gauge springs increase edge stability, so you can use the full width of the bed.

- Real space for one: At 120cm wide, the UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, which means a solo back or front sleeper can stretch out on a properly solid surface.
- Fits compact double bedrooms: It's 15cm narrower than the UK double, so a box room or studio can take a proper bed and still let the door clear.
- Edge support across a narrower bed: Three outer rows of firmer gauge springs stiffen the sides, useful in a small room where you'll sit on the edge to dress.
- Breathable natural fillings: Wool and cotton blend layers regulate temperature naturally, which means less clamminess than foam if your smaller room runs warm.
- Occasional couple use: Two can share the 120cm width for a guest room stay, and the pocket springs limit disturbance when one of you turns.
- Standard 4ft bedding: Small double is a common UK size, so frames and fitted sheets are easy to find, with a standard double duvet on top.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone, prefer a firm surface for your back, and have outgrown a UK single; or your bedroom is compact and a UK double would crowd it; or you're furnishing a guest room or holiday let where couples stay occasionally rather than nightly. Allow at least 2.4m x 2.8m of floor space.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed every night, since 120cm is a squeeze for two long term. We'd recommend the UK double instead, which is 15cm wider and needs a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m.

Is a small double Hypnos Honley big enough for a couple?
For occasional nights, yes. The UK small double is 120cm wide and the pocket springs respond individually, so movement transfers less between you. For every night, though, it's tight, and the extra firm feel gives you little forgiveness if you're pressed together. The UK double, 15cm wider, suits couples better.
What room size do I need for the Honley in a UK small double?
We suggest at least 2.4m x 2.8m. That leaves enough space to walk round the bed and open drawers or a wardrobe. If your room comfortably exceeds that, the UK double may be a better long term buy for a couple; we suggest at least 2.6m x 2.8m for that size.
How big is the Hypnos Honley small double?
It measures 120 x 190cm, which is 4ft x 6ft 3in. That's 30cm wider than the UK single and the same length, and 15cm narrower than the UK double, again the same length. The extra firm construction is identical across sizes; only the footprint changes.
Is the small double a good upgrade from a single for a teenager?
Often, yes. A teenager who has outgrown a UK single gains 30cm of width without losing any length, and because the UK small double is 15cm narrower than a UK double, the room keeps more floor space. One caution: extra firm is a specialist feel, so make sure they genuinely prefer a solid surface.
Does the edge support matter more in a small double?
Slightly, yes. On a 120cm wide mattress you're never far from the side, so the three outer rows of firmer gauge springs let you sleep near the edge or sit on it without the sag some narrower beds develop. It means you can use the full width rather than gravitating to the middle.
