- Ticking. The outer cover is made from soft to the touch, finest quality ticking. It is the surface you'll actually feel through your sheet, so the softness matters more than it might seem.
- Hand tufting and side-stitching. The mattress is hand tufted with felt washers, which holds the fillings in place so they settle evenly rather than shifting into lumps. Two rows of hand side-stitching strengthen the border, giving you firmer support right to the edge.
- Natural fillings. The fillings are all natural: British fleece wool, bamboo and cotton. Wool in particular regulates temperature well, drawing moisture away so you stay drier through the night.
- Pocket springs. Each spring has 6 coils and is hand-nested in its own calico pocket. That means the springs respond to your body individually, so you get support where you press down without disturbing your partner.
- Wool protector pad. The 5-foot size contains 1,326 vanadium steel springs, topped with a wool protector pad. The pad cushions the transition between springs and fillings, so you feel support rather than individual coils.
- Wool-upholstered borders. The borders are upholstered in wool and include air vents and handles. The vents let the mattress breathe, while the handles make turning it a slightly less awkward job.

Will the Vispring Realm UK single fit a bunk bed or mid sleeper?
The 90 x 190cm footprint matches standard single bunk, cabin and mid sleeper frames. Raised frames also set a maximum mattress depth so the guard rail stays high enough to be safe, and a traditional sprung mattress like this can sit deeper than a foam one. Check the depth shown by the retailer against the frame maker's limit before you order.
What size room do you need for a UK single mattress like the Vispring?
We suggest allowing at least 2.1m x 2.8m of floor space for a UK single. That leaves room to walk round the bed and open a wardrobe, and in a loft conversion it lets you tuck the bed lengthways under the slope while keeping the full-height side of the room clear.
Is a UK single long enough for a tall adult?
A UK single is 190cm long, the same as a UK small double and UK double. If your feet already press against the end of a standard bed, length rather than width is your problem, and the UK king is 10cm longer. For most adults sleeping alone, 190cm is comfortable.
UK single or UK small double for a teenager?
The UK single is 30cm narrower than the UK small double and the same length. If the room is small or shared with a desk, the UK single keeps more floor free. If your teenager is tall, broad or restless, the UK small double gives more room to turn; we suggest at least 2.4m x 2.8m for it.
Is a Vispring mattress sensible for a child's single bed?
It depends on how long the bed will be used. Yes, a hand-made natural mattress is a big spend for a young child, but a UK single that moves with them into their teens and then into a guest room is used for years. For a bed they'll outgrow quickly, a simpler mattress may make more sense.
