Comfort zones
The surface is divided into comfort zones, which means different areas of the mattress respond a little differently to where your body needs give and where it needs support. It's a simple way of tailoring a foam mattress without adding depth.
Standard foam
A core of polyurethane foam at 33 kg/m3 provides the firm support the mattress is built around. That density figure matters: it suggests the foam should resist softening and dipping better than lighter budget foams.
Memory foam
A layer of memory foam softens the firm core slightly, contouring to your shoulders and hips as they warm it. You'll feel a gentle cradle rather than a deep sink.
Layer details from ikea.com product page, September 2026.
- 75cm each when sharing: Two sleepers get 75cm of width apiece, which means you can turn over or stretch out without waking whoever is beside you.
- Extra length for taller sleepers: At 200cm long, the UK king adds 10cm over the UK double, a real difference if one of you is approaching six foot.
- Firm support across the full width: The 33 kg/m3 foam core keeps its shape edge to edge, so a couple's combined weight is less likely to create early dips.
- A slim build that's manageable at this size: At 16cm deep, this is one of the easier king mattresses to carry upstairs and rotate, with a shallower profile than most hybrids.
- Different schedules, less disturbance: If one of you slips out hours before the other, the extra width means getting up happens further from your partner's side of the bed.
This size suits you if...
You share the bed every night and the UK double has started to feel cramped, you and your partner keep different hours and want space to come and go without waking each other, or one of you is tall enough that the extra 10cm of length matters as much as the width. Your room can take it: we suggest at least 2.7m x 2.9m.
Consider another size if...
Your bedroom falls short of the 2.7m x 2.9m we suggest for a UK king, which is common in new build masters once wardrobes go in. We'd recommend the UK double instead, where we suggest at least 2.6m x 2.8m.

Is the Ikea Abygda in a UK king a good choice for couples?
Yes, with a condition. The UK king gives 75cm of width each, comfortably more than the 67.5cm each a UK double offers, so restless or differently scheduled partners disturb each other less. The firm feel suits back sleepers and those who like a supportive surface, although lightweight side sleepers may find it a little unforgiving on shoulders and hips.
Does the Ikea Abygda come in a UK super king?
No. The UK king is the largest size the Abygda is made in, so couples wanting 90cm each from a UK super king will need a different mattress. That said, at 75cm per sleeper the UK king is a genuine step up from a double, and it fits rooms a super king would overwhelm.
What room size do I need for the Abygda UK king?
We suggest a room of at least 2.7m x 2.9m for a UK king, which leaves enough space to walk round the bed and open drawers on both sides. That's our guidance rather than Ikea's, so treat it as a comfortable minimum. If your room is tighter, the UK double needs at least 2.6m x 2.8m.
How much bigger is the Abygda in a king than a double?
The UK king is 15cm wider and 10cm longer than the UK double, taking you from 135 x 190cm to 150 x 200cm. Per person, that's 75cm each rather than 67.5cm each. The extra length is easy to overlook, but for anyone tall it can be the more useful of the two gains.
Is the UK king Abygda hard to get upstairs?
It should be more manageable than most king mattresses. At 16cm deep, the Abygda is slimmer than typical hybrids, and an all-foam build has some flex when you're turning it through doorways and up staircases. A king is still a two-person carry, but this is at the easier end of the size.
