- The classic shared size: At 135 x 190cm you get 67.5cm each for two people sharing, which has been the standard for UK couples for decades.
- Fits the typical bedroom: We suggest allowing at least 2.6m x 2.8m, which most UK doubles rooms clear with space left for a wardrobe and drawers.
- Room for bedside tables: Because a UK double is 15cm narrower than a UK king, most rooms still take a bedside table on each side without a squeeze.
- Boxed delivery suits awkward access: The Halifax arrives compressed and rolled, so getting it up a narrow terraced staircase or round a tight landing is a one-box job.
- Bedding is easy and cheap: Double sheets and a 200 x 200cm duvet are stocked everywhere at every price, handy if you're furnishing a whole home on a stretched budget.
This size suits you if...
You share the bed every night and want the traditional couples' size, you're setting up a guest room that visiting couples will use, or you sleep alone and want space to spread out, perhaps with a dog or cat claiming a corner. It also suits anyone furnishing a first flat where the bedroom needs to hold a wardrobe and drawers as well as the bed.
Consider another size if...
You and your partner both like room to stretch and your bedroom can take something wider. The Highgrove Halifax in a UK king gives you 15cm more width and 10cm more length, and we'd recommend it if the room allows.

Is the Highgrove Halifax double big enough for two adults?
It gives 67.5cm of width each for two people sharing, which most couples find comfortable, although if either of you is broad shouldered or a restless sleeper the extra width of a UK king is noticeable. For a guest room used a few nights a year, the UK double is plenty.
What room size do I need for the Highgrove Halifax UK double?
We suggest allowing at least 2.6m x 2.8m, with around 3m x 3m the comfortable norm. That leaves walking space and, in most rooms, enough width for bedside tables on both sides. If your bedroom is smaller than that, the UK small double keeps the length while trimming 15cm off the width.
Will the boxed UK double get up a narrow staircase?
That is one of the Halifax's stronger points. It ships rolled and compressed in a box, so the awkward turn on a terraced staircase or a tight new build landing is far less of a problem than manoeuvring a rigid 135 x 190cm mattress. Give it time to expand fully once unboxed.
How big is the Highgrove Halifax in a UK double?
It measures 135 x 190cm, or 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in. That's 15cm wider than the UK small double and the same length, while the UK king is 15cm wider and 10cm longer than the UK double. Standard UK double sheets and a 200 x 200cm duvet fit it.
Should I get the Halifax in a double or a king?
It comes down to your room. The UK double leaves more floor space for a wardrobe and drawers, which matters in a first flat or second bedroom. If your room comfortably exceeds 3m x 3m and you share every night, the UK king's extra 15cm of width is worth having. Compare the retailers listed on this page for both.
