- The classic shared size: At 135 x 190cm, the UK double gives two people sharing 67.5cm each, the width couples in the UK have slept on for generations.
- Fits typical bedrooms: We suggest allowing at least 2.6m x 2.8m, which most UK bedrooms manage with space left for bedside tables on both sides.
- Room to spare where a UK king wouldn't fit: The UK double is 15cm narrower and 10cm shorter than the UK king, which often decides whether wardrobe doors still open freely.
- Generous for one: A solo sleeper gets 45cm more width than a UK single, welcome if you spread out or share the bed with a cat or dog.
- Bedding is cheap and everywhere: Double sheets and a 200 x 200cm duvet are stocked at every price point, which keeps the ongoing cost of dressing the bed down.
This size suits you if...
You're a couple furnishing a typical UK bedroom and want the standard shared size, you're kitting out a guest room that visiting couples will use, or you sleep alone and want more room than a UK single without giving the bed the whole floor. It also suits a first flat where the bed shares the room with a wardrobe and drawers.
Consider another size if...
You and your partner both like space and your room comfortably exceeds 3m x 3m. The UK king would suit you better, adding 15cm of width and 10cm of length for two adults sharing every night.

Is the Highgrove Solar Orthopocket 1500 double big enough for two adults?
It's the traditional UK couples' size, giving each of you 67.5cm of width. That's workable for most couples, although if either of you is broad shouldered or a restless sleeper, the UK king adds 15cm of width and 10cm of length. In a smaller room, the UK double is usually the sensible compromise.
What room size do I need for a UK double mattress?
We suggest allowing at least 2.6m x 2.8m, with around 3m x 3m the comfortable norm. That leaves space to walk round the bed and fit bedside tables on both sides. If your room is tighter than that, the UK small double keeps the same 190cm length while trimming 15cm of width.
Should I get the Highgrove Solar Orthopocket 1500 in a double or a king?
The UK double is 15cm narrower and 10cm shorter than the UK king. Choose the UK double if your room is a typical size or you want bedding that's cheap and easy to find. Choose the UK king if you both value space and the room clears 3m x 3m comfortably.
How big is the Highgrove Solar Orthopocket 1500 UK double?
It measures 135 x 190cm, which is 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in. That's the standard UK double footprint, so it fits any UK double bed frame and takes standard double sheets with a 200 x 200cm duvet. Check the retailer listing for the depth, as Highgrove hasn't published verified construction details.
Will a double mattress get up the stairs in an older house?
A UK double is usually manageable on the turning stairs of older terraces and tight new build landings, where a UK king or UK super king can struggle. Highgrove doesn't publish weight or delivery format details for this mattress, so ask the retailer whether it arrives rolled or flat before you order.
