Layer details from mattressonline.co.uk product page, September 2026.
- Fits where bigger beds won't: At 3ft x 6ft 3in, the UK single leaves floor space for a desk, wardrobe and toy storage in a child's room without the bed dominating.
- Full-width springs for a narrow bed: Firmer outer rows of springs mean the edges hold up, so a restless child or a guest can use all 90cm of width.
- Natural fibres a growing sleeper can live with: Wool and cotton layers move heat and moisture away, which matters in small rooms that warm up quickly overnight.
- A medium feel that spans ages: Medium support works for teens and adults alike, so the mattress can move from a child's room to a spare room later.
- Cheap, easy bedding: Standard single sheets and duvets are the most widely stocked of any size, useful if a child gets through bedding quickly.
This size suits you if...
You're buying for a child or teenager and want a handcrafted sprung mattress rather than foam, you sleep alone in a compact room or a loft space where only a narrow footprint fits, or you're kitting out a spare room or study that occasionally hosts guests and needs the floor space back the rest of the time.
Consider another size if...
You're an adult who spreads out in your sleep, or you have the room to spare. The UK small double is 30cm wider at the same length, and we suggest at least 2.4m x 2.8m of floor space for it.

What size is the Hypnos Cawthorne Luxury UK single?
It measures 90 x 190cm, which is 3ft x 6ft 3in. That is the standard UK one-person size, so it fits standard single bed frames, single fitted sheets and a regular single duvet without any hunting for unusual bedding.
Will the Hypnos Cawthorne UK single fit a bunk or mid sleeper bed?
The width and length match standard bunk and mid sleeper frames, but this mattress is 26cm deep, which is more than many raised frames allow. Check your frame's maximum mattress depth and guard rail height first: on a top bunk the rail needs to sit well above the sleep surface.
Is the Hypnos Cawthorne UK single a good choice for a child?
It can be. The medium sprung feel and breathable wool and cotton layers suit growing sleepers, and the firmer outer springs support a child who sleeps close to the edge. Some owners find it firmer than the medium label suggests, which is often no bad thing for a lighter body.
How much floor space does a UK single need?
We suggest allowing at least 2.1m x 2.8m, which gives you walking room alongside the bed. That makes the UK single an easy fit in box rooms, lofts with sloping ceilings and spare rooms that double as an office, where a wider mattress would crowd everything out.
