- Room to stretch, alone: At 30cm wider than the UK single, this size lets one adult sprawl, turn and change position without hanging an arm off the edge.
- Fits where a double will not: It's 15cm narrower than the UK double, which can be the difference between a door that clears and one that doesn't in a box room or studio.
- Usable width right to the sides: The firmer outer rows of springs support you at the edge, which matters more on a narrower mattress where you use every centimetre.
- Breathable for smaller rooms: Wool and cotton layers move heat and moisture away, useful in compact bedrooms and loft conversions where air can get warm and still.
- Standard 4ft bedding: Small double is a standard UK size, so fitted sheets and frames are easy to find, and a standard double duvet works fine.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone most nights and have outgrown a UK single, but your room can't spare the width of a full double. Perhaps it's a teenager's room that still needs floor space, a studio flat where the door swing decides everything, or a guest room that hosts a couple a few weekends a year rather than every night.
Consider another size if...
Two of you share the bed every night, in which case 120cm across gets tight quickly. We'd recommend the UK double instead, which is 15cm wider and needs a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m.

Is a small double Hypnos Cawthorne big enough for a couple?
For occasional nights, yes: a visiting couple in a guest room will manage comfortably enough for a weekend. For nightly sharing, 120cm of width leaves little space per person, and the wool and cotton layers can't compensate for elbows. Couples sleeping together every night would be better served by the UK double.
What room size do I need for the Cawthorne in a UK small double?
We suggest a room of at least 2.4m x 2.8m. That leaves enough space to walk round the bed and open drawers without shuffling sideways. If your room is smaller than that, a UK single may be the more liveable choice; we suggest at least 2.1m x 2.8m for that size.
How much bigger is the small double Cawthorne than the single?
The UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, and the two are the same length at 190cm. That extra width is the whole point of the size: one adult gets real spreading room, with the Cawthorne's firmer outer spring rows keeping the edges supportive so all of it is usable.
Will the edge support matter more in this size?
Arguably yes. The Cawthorne's outer rows of springs are firmer than the centre, and on a 120cm-wide mattress you're more likely to sleep near the edge, especially if two of you share occasionally. Being able to lie close to the side without rolling off makes a narrower mattress feel bigger than the number suggests.
Should I size up to the UK double instead of the small double?
Only if your room allows it. The UK small double is 15cm narrower than the UK double, both 190cm long, and we suggest at least 2.6m x 2.8m for the UK double. If you'd lose a wardrobe or block a door to gain that 15cm, the small double is the more sensible buy.
