- A proper mattress in the smallest standard footprint: At 90cm wide, this size leaves floor space free in a child's room where the bed competes with a wardrobe, a desk and toy storage.
- Pocket springs for a growing sleeper: Individual springs respond to shoulders and hips separately, which means a teenager gets genuine contouring support rather than the flat feel of a budget open coil single.
- Medium firm suits solo sleepers of most builds: A medium firm feel supports back and combination sleepers well, although lightweight side sleepers may find it slightly solid at the shoulder.
- Two singles beat one double in a guest room: A pair of UK singles gives visiting friends or grandchildren separate beds, and each 90 x 190cm mattress is easy to shift when the room changes use.
- Cheap, easy bedding: Single sheets and duvets are the most widely stocked of any size, which keeps the running costs of a child's or spare bed down.
This size suits you if...
You're buying for a child or teenager and want pocket spring support rather than a basic open coil, you sleep alone in a compact room or first flat where a wider bed would crowd the space, or you're kitting out a spare room, perhaps with two singles rather than one bigger bed.
Consider another size if...
You're an adult who shares the bed, or you sprawl and keep finding your elbows over the edge. We'd recommend the UK double instead, which is 45cm wider and the same length; allow at least 2.6m x 2.8m for it.

What room size do I need for a UK single mattress?
We suggest allowing at least 2.1m x 2.8m of floor space for a UK single, which is our own guidance rather than the manufacturer's. That leaves room to walk round and open drawers. If the room doubles as an office or holds two beds for siblings, measure the walkway between furniture before you commit.
Is the Cotton Pocket 1400 in a UK single suitable for a child?
Yes, with one caveat. The pocket spring construction gives a child or teenager proper contouring support as they grow, which is a step up from basic open coil singles. The medium firm feel may feel a little solid for a very light child who sleeps on their side, so consider their build and sleeping position.
Will this UK single fit a bunk or mid sleeper frame?
The 90 x 190cm footprint matches standard UK bunk and mid sleeper frames. Depth is the thing to check: raised frames need the mattress to sit below the guard rail, and British Bed Company doesn't publish a depth in the listings we've seen, so check the brand's own guidance against your frame before buying.
Should I choose the UK single or the UK small double for a teenager?
The UK single is 30cm narrower than the UK small double, and both are the same length, so it comes down to room size. For the UK small double we suggest at least 2.4m x 2.8m of floor space. If the room can take it, the extra width suits a growing teen; if not, the UK single still fits an adult comfortably.
Are two UK singles a good guest room setup?
Often, yes. Two 90 x 190cm mattresses suit guests who aren't a couple, and the pocket springs mean each bed supports its sleeper independently. You'll need roughly double the floor space plus a walkway between the beds, so measure carefully. The prices shown on this page are updated as retailers change them, so compare before buying two.
