- Surface. A soft damask fabric cover, machine stitched for longevity and traditionally tufted. Tufting holds the fillings in place, which means fewer lumps developing over the years.
- Comfort layer. A blend of natural wool, mohair, silk and kapok. Kapok is exceptionally durable, naturally hypoallergenic, highly breathable and moisture-wicking, which means a cooler, fresher feel through the night.
- Support layer. Platinum 3D polyester that is fully recyclable at the end of its life. A small but welcome nod to sustainability in a category that often ends up in landfill.
- Spring system. Individually wrapped pocket springs distribute body weight evenly for full-body support. Micro pocket springs react to the slightest movement, which means better contouring and less partner disturbance.

- The classic shared size: A UK double has been the standard couples' size for generations, which means it fits the rooms most UK homes were actually built with.
- Room left for furniture: Allow at least 2.6m x 2.8m and you should still manage bedside tables on both sides, something a wider bed can quietly rule out.
- Less partner disturbance where it counts: With 67.5cm each, you sleep closer than on a UK king, so the micro pocket springs' contouring genuinely matters when one of you turns over.
- Natural fills for two warm bodies: Wool, mohair, silk and kapok breathe and wick moisture, which helps when two people share a narrower surface and heat builds faster.
- Easy to dress: Double sheets and a 200 x 200cm duvet are stocked everywhere at every price, useful if you're kitting out a whole home at once.
- Flippable for the long haul: The double-sided design lets you turn it regularly, which spreads wear evenly across a surface two people use every night.
This size suits you if...
You're a couple in a typical UK bedroom and want a natural, medium-tension mattress in a footprint that leaves the room usable, or you're furnishing a guest room that visiting couples will share. It also suits a solo sleeper who likes space to spread out, even with a dog or cat claiming a corner, and anyone who wants the widest choice of affordable bedding.
Consider another size if...
You share every night and find 67.5cm each a squeeze, or one of you is tall. We'd recommend the UK king instead: it's 15cm wider and 10cm longer, and we suggest a room of at least 2.7m x 2.9m for it.

Is the Feather & Black Arlen double big enough for two people?
It works for most couples, though it's cosy rather than roomy. Two people sharing get 67.5cm each, a little less width than a single bed apiece. The Arlen's micro pocket springs help here, reacting to small movements so you feel your partner's turning less. If either of you sprawls, the UK king is 15cm wider.
What room size do I need for the Arlen in a UK double?
We suggest at least 2.6m x 2.8m, with around 3m x 3m the comfortable norm. That's our guidance, not the manufacturer's. In a room near the minimum you can usually still fit a wardrobe and a chest of drawers, which is why the UK double remains the default in second bedrooms and first flats.
Should I get the Arlen in a double or a king?
Choose the UK double if your room is modest or you want bedside tables on both sides without the bed swallowing the floor. The UK king is 15cm wider and 10cm longer, and needs a room of at least 2.7m x 2.9m by our reckoning. Sharing every night long term, the extra width is usually worth having.
What bedding fits the Arlen double?
Standard UK double bedding: double fitted sheets for the 135 x 190cm mattress and a 200 x 200cm double duvet. This is the most widely stocked bedding size in Britain, so you'll find options at every price point, handy if you're spreading a budget across a whole home rather than one room.
Will a double Arlen fit up the stairs in an older house?
At 135cm wide it's more manageable on turning staircases in older terraces or tight new build landings than a UK king would be, though the Arlen is a substantial pocket sprung mattress rather than a rolled one, so it arrives full size. Measure your tightest turn before ordering to save an awkward doorstep moment.
