Layer Details
- Surface. A soft damask fabric cover, machine stitched for longevity and traditionally tufted. Tufting holds the fillings in place, which means fewer lumps developing over the years.
- Comfort layer. A blend of natural wool, mohair, silk and kapok. Kapok is exceptionally durable, naturally hypoallergenic, highly breathable and moisture-wicking, which means a cooler, fresher feel through the night.
- Support layer. Platinum 3D polyester that is fully recyclable at the end of its life. A small but welcome nod to sustainability in a category that often ends up in landfill.
- Spring system. Individually wrapped pocket springs distribute body weight evenly for full-body support. Micro pocket springs react to the slightest movement, which means better contouring and less partner disturbance.

- Solo space without a double's footprint: At 120cm wide, the UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, so you can spread out while keeping 15cm of floor space a UK double would take.
- Natural fills in a smaller room: Wool, mohair, silk and kapok breathe well, which matters in box rooms and loft conversions where air circulates less freely than in a large bedroom.
- Micro springs for occasional sharing: The micro pocket springs respond to small movements, so when a partner or guest does share the 120cm width, you'll feel less of their tossing and turning.
- A flippable mattress that's easier to flip: The Arlen is double-sided, and at 4ft wide it's a more manageable turn for one person than the same mattress in a larger size.
- Standard 4ft bedding: The UK small double is a standard UK size, so fitted sheets and frames are straightforward to find, with a normal double duvet on top.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone most nights and have outgrown a UK single, but your room can't spare the extra 15cm a UK double demands. Or you're furnishing a guest room or holiday let where couples stay occasionally rather than nightly, and you want a bed that feels generous to one person. A teenager moving up from a single fits here too, provided the budget stretches to a premium mattress.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed every night, as 120cm is workable for the odd stay but tight long term. If the room allows at least 2.6m x 2.8m, we'd recommend the UK double instead for that extra 15cm of width.

Is a small double Arlen big enough for a couple?
For occasional nights, yes. The Arlen's micro pocket springs limit partner disturbance, which helps when two people share 120cm of width. For nightly sharing, most couples find it cramped, and the UK double, 15cm wider at the same length, is the better long-term choice if your room allows at least 2.6m x 2.8m.
What room size do I need for the small double Arlen?
We suggest allowing at least 2.4m x 2.8m. That leaves enough space to open the door, walk around the bed and, usefully with the Arlen, room to flip it. It's a double-sided mattress, so you'll want clearance to turn it over a few times a year without wrestling furniture out of the way.
How big is the Feather & Black Arlen small double?
It measures 120 x 190cm, which is 4ft x 6ft 3in. That's 30cm wider than the UK single and the same length, so anyone comfortable lengthways on a single gets identical legroom here with noticeably more width to spread out.
Is the small double Arlen good for a teenager's room?
It suits a teenager who has outgrown a UK single but whose room can't lose much floor space, since it adds 30cm of width without any extra length. The natural fills breathe well in smaller rooms. The one caveat is price: the Arlen sits in the premium bracket, which is a big spend for a bed that may move house in a few years.
Is the small double harder to find than other Arlen sizes?
Stock does vary by size, so the simplest approach is to compare the retailers listed on this page; the prices shown here are updated as retailers change them. The 4ft size itself is a standard UK size, so frames and bedding are easy to source even when mattress stock fluctuates.
