- Surface. A soft damask fabric cover, machine stitched for longevity and traditionally tufted. Tufting holds the fillings in place, which means fewer lumps developing over the years.
- Comfort layer. A blend of natural wool, mohair, silk and kapok. Kapok is exceptionally durable, naturally hypoallergenic, highly breathable and moisture-wicking, which means a cooler, fresher feel through the night.
- Support layer. Platinum 3D polyester that is fully recyclable at the end of its life. A small but welcome nod to sustainability in a category that often ends up in landfill.
- Spring system. Individually wrapped pocket springs distribute body weight evenly for full-body support. Micro pocket springs react to the slightest movement, which means better contouring and less partner disturbance.

- A footprint that frees the room: At 3ft wide it leaves space for a desk, wardrobe and toy storage in a child's bedroom that has to do several jobs at once.
- Natural fills for young sleepers: Kapok is naturally hypoallergenic and moisture-wicking, a reassuring quality in a bed a child will sleep on every night for years.
- Flippable, so it lasts the growing years: The double-sided design lets you turn it regularly, which means it should still feel supportive when a nine-year-old becomes a fifteen-year-old.
- Medium tension for changing bodies: A medium feel suits front, back and side sleepers, useful when the person on it is still working out how they sleep.
- An easy guest room fit: Two UK singles with a walkway between them often make a spare room more flexible than one larger bed, and single bedding is the cheapest to stock.
This size suits you if...
You're furnishing a child's or teenager's room and want a mattress that won't need replacing every few years, you sleep alone in a compact bedroom and value natural materials over synthetic foams, or you're setting up a guest room and want visitors to sleep on something genuinely comfortable rather than an afterthought.
Consider another size if...
You're an adult who spreads out in the night, or you share the bed even occasionally. We'd recommend the Arlen in a UK small double instead, which is 30cm wider and the same length; allow at least 2.4m x 2.8m of floor space.

How big is the Feather & Black Arlen in a UK single?
It measures 90 x 190cm, or 3ft x 6ft 3in. That's the standard UK one-person size, so it fits standard single frames, standard single fitted sheets and a 135 x 200cm single duvet without any hunting for unusual bedding.
What room size do I need for a single Arlen mattress?
We suggest allowing at least 2.1m x 2.8m of floor space. That leaves room to walk alongside the bed and open drawers or a wardrobe, which matters in a child's room where the bed is competing with a desk and toy storage.
Is the Arlen in a UK single a good choice for a child's bedroom?
It's a premium buy for a child, but a defensible one. The kapok and wool fills are naturally hypoallergenic and breathable, and the flippable construction means it can genuinely last through the teenage years. If you'd rather spend less on a bed that will be outgrown, a cheaper single may make more sense.
Should I choose the Arlen in a UK single or a UK small double?
The UK single is 30cm narrower than the UK small double; the two are the same length. A solo adult who likes room to sprawl may prefer the UK small double, which needs at least 2.4m x 2.8m of floor space. For children, teens and most guest rooms, the UK single is the practical pick.
Where can I buy the Feather & Black Arlen in a UK single?
Availability shifts, so the most reliable answer is the live comparison on this page, where prices are updated as retailers change them. Because the Arlen is made exclusively for Feather & Black, it isn't as widely stocked as some brands, so checking here first saves a fruitless search.
