- Sleep surface. A quilted sleep surface wrapped in soft-touch damask fabric, machine stitched for longevity. This is the traditional, breathable finish you'd expect from a sprung mattress rather than a knitted foam-style cover.
- Comfort layer. British wool and mohair sit beneath the surface, regulating temperature and wicking away moisture. In practice that means a drier, cooler feel than synthetic fillings, which is welcome if you tend to overheat.
- Support layer. A layer of Platinum 3D polyester that is fully recyclable at the end of the mattress's life. It adds structure between the fillings and the springs while keeping disposal a little greener.
- Spring system. Individually wrapped pocket springs paired with micro pocket springs that react to the slightest movement. Because each spring moves independently, you're less likely to feel a partner shifting on the other side of the bed.

- Real stretching room for one: At 120cm across, the UK small double gives a solo sleeper 30cm more width than a UK single, which means you can change position freely all night.
- Fits rooms a double won't: It's 15cm narrower than a UK double, often the margin that decides whether a door still opens fully or a wardrobe stays where it is.
- Firm support across the full width: The 7,200 pocket springs respond independently, so the edge of a smaller mattress feels as supported as the middle when you spread out.
- Cooler nights in a snug room: Wool and mohair fillings wick moisture and regulate temperature, useful in the compact bedrooms this size usually ends up in, where air can sit still.
- Standard bedding, easy to find: 4ft is a standard UK size, and at 23cm deep the Walters fits regular small double fitted sheets without a struggle.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone most nights and have outgrown a UK single but your room can't spare the width a UK double demands, or you're furnishing a guest room or holiday let where couples stay occasionally rather than nightly. The firm tension suits back and front sleepers, so a solo adult who sleeps that way in a box room or loft conversion is squarely who this size is for.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed every night, because 120cm is snug for two adults long term. We'd recommend the UK double instead, which is 15cm wider and needs a room of at least 2.6m x 2.8m.

Is the Walters small double big enough for a couple?
For occasional nights, yes. The pocket springs move independently, so you're less likely to feel a partner shifting even at this width. For every night, 120cm across is tight for two adults, and we'd suggest the UK double, which is 15cm wider, for regular sharing.
What room size do I need for a small double mattress?
We suggest a room of at least 2.4m x 2.8m for a UK small double. That leaves space to walk round the bed and open drawers. If your room comfortably exceeds that, it may be worth checking whether the UK double, at 2.6m x 2.8m minimum, would fit instead.
Is the small double Walters good for a teenager's room?
It's a sensible upgrade for a teenager who has outgrown a UK single, adding 30cm of width without giving up much floor space. One caveat: the Walters is firm, and a lightweight sleeper, particularly one who sleeps on their side, may find it presses on hips and shoulders.
How much smaller is the small double than a UK king?
Noticeably. The UK small double is 30cm narrower and 10cm shorter than the UK king, which is why it fits loft conversions and box rooms that a larger bed would dominate. Tall sleepers should note the 190cm length before choosing.
Does the small double Walters feel any different from the larger sizes?
The firmness, fillings and spring construction are identical across all five sizes. What changes is proportion: a solo sleeper gets generous space on the UK small double, while two sharing every night would find it cramped. Prices differ by size too, so compare the retailers listed on this page.
