- Cover. A quality Belgian damask fabric with a traditional hand tufting finish. The tufting, done with nylon tapes and cotton tufts on both sides, holds the fillings in place and adds to the firm feel.
- Fillings. White fibre fillings, a lightweight, high loft material that retains its shape well. It is hypo-allergenic, which means fewer irritants for allergy-prone sleepers.
- Spring System. Open coil springs set out in rows from head to toe, each row joined by a spiral helical wire. This gives a connected, traditional support feel rather than the independent movement of pocket springs.
- Border. A thick rod-edge wire runs around the perimeter springs to reinforce the border. In practice that means better edge support when sitting on the side of the bed.

- 30cm more width than a UK single: The UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, which means a solo adult can actually roll over without meeting the edge.
- Motion transfer matters less here: Open coil springs move as one unit, a drawback for couples, but on a mattress mostly slept on alone that trade-off barely registers.
- Fits where a double won't: At 15cm narrower than the UK double, it leaves walking room in box rooms, loft conversions and compact second bedrooms.
- Usable right to the edge: A rod-edge wire reinforces the perimeter springs, which means the full 120cm width stays supportive rather than sloping away at the sides.
- Flippable, and light enough to manage: The double-sided design needs regular turning, and at 4ft wide that's a job one person can do without help.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone and have outgrown a single but your room can't take a full double, you're furnishing a guest room that hosts couples a few weekends a year rather than nightly, or you want a firm, no-frills bed for a rental or holiday let where the second bedroom is tight. The connected spring feel suits a solo sleeper who likes a firmer surface.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed every night, because open coil springs transmit movement and 120cm is snug for two long term. We'd recommend the UK double instead, which gives a couple 15cm more width.

What room size do I need for a small double Highgrove Solar Luxury Dream?
We suggest allowing at least 2.4m x 2.8m. That gives you space to walk down one side and open the door, which is exactly the calculation that matters in a box room or loft conversion where a full double would leave nowhere to stand.
Is the Highgrove Solar Luxury Dream small double okay for couples?
For occasional nights, yes, which makes it a reasonable guest room choice. For every night, less so: at 120cm wide it's snug for two, and the open coil springs move together, so you'd feel a partner turning over. Nightly couples should look at the UK double.
Is a UK small double big enough for one adult?
Yes, comfortably. The UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, which is enough for an adult to spread out, and the firm open coil feel of this mattress suits a solo sleeper who wants support rather than sink. It's a natural step up for a teenager too.
Is the small double easy to flip and turn?
Easier than the larger sizes. This is a double-sided mattress that needs regular flipping to even out wear, and at 4ft wide one person can manage it alone, which is handy if it's going in a guest room or let where you're the one doing the maintenance.
Will bedding for the Highgrove Solar Luxury Dream small double be easy to find?
Yes. The 4ft small double is a standard UK size, so fitted sheets are widely stocked, and a standard double duvet works on top. One thing to check: this mattress is 26cm deep, so choose fitted sheets with enough depth to tuck under properly.
