- Cover. A hard wearing Belgian damask cover with a hand tufted finish. The tufting isn't just decorative: it adds strength and helps the mattress hold its shape over time.
- Fillings. Several layers of quality fillings, including white fibre, a lightweight, high loft material that's hypo-allergenic and keeps its shape, alongside Tencel. Tencel is a eucalyptus treated fibre that improves heat flow and moisture dissipation, which means less clamminess on warm nights.
- Spring System. An extra firm open coil unit made of rows of hourglass shaped Bonnell springs, connected top and bottom by a helical wire running from head to foot. This gives a firm, uniform feel across the whole surface rather than the contouring you'd get from pocket springs.
- Edge Support. A thick rod-edge wire strengthens the perimeter of the spring unit. In practice that means firmer edges to sit on and less of the border breakdown that cheaper open coil mattresses can suffer.

- Real stretching room for one: At 120cm wide, this small double is 30cm wider than the UK single, which means a solo adult can spread out properly.
- Fits rooms a double won't: It's 15cm narrower than the UK double, so a box room, studio or loft conversion can take it while still leaving space to walk past.
- Firm edges you can use: The rod-edge wire around the spring unit keeps the perimeter firm, so the full 4ft width stays usable rather than sloping off at the sides.
- Even feel across the surface: The extra firm open coil unit gives the same uniform support edge to edge, useful when one sleeper is using the whole 120cm.
- Sensible for occasional guests: A visiting couple can share it for a weekend, which makes it a practical pick for a guest room or holiday let's second bedroom.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone most nights and have outgrown a UK single, but your bedroom can't take a full double; you're furnishing a guest room or holiday let where couples stay a few weekends a year rather than nightly; or you're fitting out a loft conversion or box room where a 120cm width is the difference between the door clearing and the door not clearing.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed with a partner every night. Open coil springs transfer more movement than pocket springs, and at 120cm you'd feel every turn, so we'd recommend the UK double or UK king instead if the room allows.

Is a small double Highgrove Solar Ortho Dream big enough for a couple?
For occasional stays, yes. At 120 x 190cm two adults can share comfortably enough for a weekend, and the rod-edge wire keeps the outer edges supportive when both of you are using them. For every night, the open coil unit's movement transfer becomes more noticeable at this width, so the UK double is the safer long-term choice.
What room size do I need for a small double mattress?
We suggest allowing at least 2.4m x 2.8m. That leaves enough room to walk around the bed and open drawers or a wardrobe. In a loft conversion or box room, the 120cm width often decides whether you can still stand beside the bed, which is exactly where this size beats a full double.
How much wider is the small double than a single?
The UK small double is 30cm wider than the UK single at 120 x 190cm, or 4ft x 6ft 3in. For a teenager who's outgrown a single, or an adult who likes to spread out, that extra width is a noticeable upgrade without taking much more floor space from the room.
Does the small double Solar Ortho Dream feel as firm as the bigger sizes?
Yes. The extra firm open coil unit gives the same uniform, traditional feel regardless of size, and at 120cm wide one sleeper sits well within the supported area. The rod-edge perimeter matters slightly more here than in larger sizes, because a solo sleeper on a small double is more likely to use the full width, edges included.
What bedding fits a small double mattress?
Fitted sheets need to be small double, or 4ft, size to sit properly on the 120 x 190cm surface. A standard double duvet works well on top. Because 4ft is a standard UK size, frames and bedding are easy to find, so you won't be hunting for specialist linen the way you might with an EU size.
