Cover
A soft stretch knit fabric with a micro quilted finish, which secures the outer fabric to the surface layers. In practice that means the top stays smooth and in place rather than shifting or bunching.
Fillings
White fibre fillings that are lightweight, high loft and hypo-allergenic, which means they hold their shape well and suit allergy-prone sleepers. Tencel, a eucalyptus treated fibre, is blended in to improve heat flow and wick away moisture, helpful if you tend to sleep warm.
Spring System
Hourglass shaped springs set in head-to-toe rows, connected by spiral wires into an interconnected open coil unit. This is a hardwearing, traditional design, although it does transfer more movement across the bed than pocket springs, so a restless partner will be more noticeable.
Edge Support
A thick rod-edge wire attached to the perimeter springs to prevent border breakdown. You'll feel this as edge to edge support, so sitting on the side of the bed or sleeping near the edge won't cause early sagging.
Layer details from archerssleepcentre.co.uk product page, September 2026.
- Real space for one sleeper: The 120cm width is 30cm more than a UK single, which means you can roll over and starfish without an elbow hanging off the side.
- Fits rooms a double crowds: It's 15cm narrower than a UK double, often the difference between a room that works and a bed you have to shuffle around.
- Edge support matters more at 4ft: The rod-edge wire around the perimeter keeps the border firm, so you can use the full 120cm width without the side giving way.
- Sleeps cooler in a snug room: Tencel fibres in the fillings improve heat flow and wick moisture, useful in the smaller, warmer rooms this size usually ends up in.
- Copes with occasional sharing: The medium to firm open coil unit does transfer movement, but for a guest room used by couples a few weekends a year that's a fair trade at this price.
This size suits you if...
You sleep alone most nights and want more width than a single without giving your room over to a full double, or you're furnishing a box room, loft conversion or rental second bedroom where 15cm of saved width keeps a walkway clear. It also suits a guest room that hosts couples occasionally rather than nightly, where the Solar Supreme's motion transfer is a minor point.
Consider another size if...
You share the bed every night, since the interconnected open coil unit passes movement across a 120cm width that already feels snug for two. We'd recommend the UK double instead, which is 15cm wider.

Is the Highgrove Solar Supreme small double big enough for a couple?
For occasional nights, yes. Two adults can share the 120cm width for a weekend stay, which makes this size a practical guest room choice. For nightly sharing it's a squeeze, and the open coil springs pass movement across the bed, so a restless partner is noticeable. Full-time couples would be happier on the UK double.
What room size do I need for the Solar Supreme in a small double?
We suggest allowing at least 2.4m x 2.8m. The mattress itself is 120 x 190cm, so that leaves space to open a door and get in from at least one side. In a box room or studio, the 15cm saved against a UK double is often what keeps a wardrobe usable.
Should I buy the Highgrove Solar Supreme in a small double or a double?
It comes down to your room and who sleeps there. The UK small double is 15cm narrower than the UK double, so it suits solo sleepers and compact bedrooms where a 4ft 6in frame would dominate. If two of you will use it every night, the UK double is the better fit for this open coil design.
Is a small double a good upgrade from a single for a teenager?
Usually, yes. The Solar Supreme in a UK small double is 30cm wider than a UK single, enough for a growing teenager to stretch out, while its 190cm length matches the single they're leaving. The medium to firm feel is supportive, though lighter side sleepers may find it slightly firm at first.
Can I sleep near the edge of the small double Solar Supreme?
Yes, and on a 120cm mattress that matters, because a solo sleeper who spreads out will use the borders more than they would on a wider bed. A rod-edge wire runs around the perimeter springs, which means the sides resist sagging when you sit on them or sleep close to the edge.
